Tarboro's boys, coached by Jim Brett won their second straight team crown as Carter Suggs won three events and anchored Tarboro to another in the Mile Relay. The East Carolina bound Suggs long jumped 23-1, won the 100 yard dash in 9.5, set a state record of 21.0 in the 220, and ran a 47.1 440 yard split to push Tarboro to a state record 3:18.5. The old record was 3:19.0 by Winston-Salem Atkins in 1971.

Suggs' 21.0 took a tenth off the old state meet record he set in 1973.

In the boys meet, records were set in six events and tied in one.

Ashbrook's Henry Jones took over four seconds off the Mile record with a 4:09.8, shattering the record set the previous year by Tom Ward of Chapel Hill.

David Ward (Olympic HS, Charlotte) vaulted 15-0 to break the pole vault record of 14-10 set the previous year by Broughton's David Robinson.

Rufus Crawford (Hunter Huss HS, Gastonia) cleared 6-9 1/4 to better the high jump record. The old record was 6-8 1/4 by Myers Park's Chandler Muse in 1972.

1974 was the second year the triple jump was held. George Jackson (Wilmington Hoggard) jumped 47-11.5 to better the record set the previous year by Melvin Scott (Fayetteville 71st) of 46-1.75.

Tony Bouler (West Mecklenburg) tied the meet record for the 180-yard Low Hurdles. His 19.2 matched the 1967 record set by Wayne Bowman (Charlotte Independence).

1974 was the third year that the girls state meet was held. Meet records were set in nine of the 13 events and tied in two others.
