1970 was the first year that the state meet was run on an all-weather track. The athletes enjoyed NC State's new Tartan track and runways.

Three state meet records were set:

Mile - 4:15.2 Jim Wilkins, Roxboro (Old record 4:16.1 by Wilkins, 1969)

Mile Relay - 3:21.7 Charlotte Myers Park (Old record 3:22.9 by Winston-Salem Atkins 1969)

Pole Vault - 18-8 3/4 Steve Peterson, Raleigh Broughton (Old record 13-8 by Pat Hilliard, Salisbury 1967)

Carlester Crumpler of Wilson Fike tied the high hurdles record of 14.3.

Jerry Stancil of East Montgomery and Haywood Ray of Raleigh Ligon both tied the 100-yard dash mark with times of 9.8. Stancil won in Group I and Ray in Group II.

Coach Stuart Allen of Myers Park led the Mustangs to a 15-point win over Wilson Fike in the 3-A/4-A division.

In the 1-A/2-A, Hendersonville, led by coach Phil Britnall edged Polk Central by a point to win the title.
