The boys meet was moved to Cary High School for 1978 due to the resurfacing of NC State University's track.

Tarboro's boys won the team title with 37 points. They scored first places in the 100, 440, 880, 880 Relay, and Triple Jump.

State meet records fell in four events. Dan Morton (Greensboro Grimsley) shattered the 2-mile record with a 9:02.31 clocking. The old record was 9:13.7 set in 1973 by Danny Schlesinger of Raleigh Sanderson.

Garinger's Mike Rodriguez set a new meet record in the discus with a throw of 172-5. The old record was 171-8 by Chapel Hill's Dave Taylor in 1968.

Another meet record fell in the vault as East Rowan junior Alvin Charleston cleared 15-1 to better the 15-0 record set in 1974 by David Ward of Charlotte Olympic.

Four high jumpers bettered the meet record of 6-9.25 set in 1974 by Rufus Crawford of Gastonia Hunter Huss. Scotland County's Robert Hicks, Northeast Guilford sophomore Baron Hunter, defending state champ Gary Parmley (West Carteret) and Bertie senior Russell Parker all cleared 6-10.
