Laney Returns 6 out of their top 7 from last season only losing their #5 Brooklyn Barnett to graduation. This is a squad that has state meet experience qualifying out of the 4A East regional and finishing 13th last season. After strong track seasons from their top 3 they will certainly improve on that placing.
Natalie Tyner served as their top girl all of last season, and finished 6th at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships in the 3200 this fall doing wonders for her confidence. She also won the 4A East Region on her way to the state meet. Cameron Smithwick also had a strong track season running a 5:22 1600 PR at her regional meet and making it into the state meet. They will carry a lot of weight with the need to be towards the front of every race this season for the Buccaneers. Tyner should even challenge to be a top 10 girl at the end of this season.
Where Laney will need work is with their 5-7 runners. They really need two girls around their #3 girl Haley Smithwick and they'll be a really strong team this fall. Someone who could be that girl is Hannah Glew, who has no cross country experience and only one year of track under her belt. But she's run similar times to Breanna Bakker who looks to dip under 20 minutes this season. If everything comes together for the Buccanners they could be A LOT stronger than they look!
