NCHSAA 4A State Championship Meet Preview

Boys Distance

1600m Run

Anton Idhammar (Cary) placed 2nd last year and comes in as a heavy favorite this year with a 1600m PR of 4:12.42.  He'll do what he can to conserve energy for the 1000m, but will have a lot of athletes challenging him this weekend.  Carson Williams (Cardinal Gibbons) has run 4:19.78 this season and Tim Haughton (Apex Friendship) 4:20.15.  Unless someone wants to make it a fast pace early, it'll come down to a fast last 800m where we can see a lot of athletes have a major improvement from their seed.

1000m Run

Idhammar has run 2:29.88 in the 1000m, but will have a 1600m and likely a 4x800m leg under his belt.  Will Atkins (West Forsyth) has been in great form recently with a 1:55.5 800m at the VA Showcase and a solo 2:33.86 1000m at the Eastern HS Challenge last weekend.  Stephen Atkinson (Cary) has run 2:33.23 this year and will likely also be on his third race of the day.  Knowing most of his competitors have a 1600m under their belt I'd think Atkins will try to make it a honest pace from the gun and force the field to run their best to beat him.

3200m Run

The 3200m is wide open with a lot of athletes having close PRs.  Williams has the best PR from Dash for Doobie of 9:14.72.  He's entered in both the 1600m and 1000m.  Nick Scudder (Millbrook) and JJ Malach (Broughton) have the best marks from the indoor season of 9:18 and 9:19 from the VA Showcase.  Both are not entered in the 1600m as they focus on the 3200m individual title.  Haughton, Ian Harrison (Panther Creek) and Brian Picone (Cary) have all broken 9:20 this season as well as we should have a tight pack up front pushing for the 4A title.
