NCRunners XC Countdown Boys #10: Cary's James Elkan

Cary senior James Elkan comes in at No. 10 on our pre-season cross country countdown! Elkan was 9th at the 2020 NCHSAA 4A state meet and is one of only three all-state returners in 4A. He led Cary to a 4th place finish as a team, but they were only 9 points away from first place.

He ran 15:54 to take 3rd place at the 2020 NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional.

He only competed in four meets during the outdoor track season. He holds personal bests from his sophomore season of 4:32 in the 1600m, and 9:49 in the 3200m.

It's been quite the journey for Elkan, he was Cary's 6th runner on their 2018 NCHSAA 4A cross country state championship team, where he placed 76th. He placed 28th in the 2019 state meet, finishing as Cary's No. 1 runner as a sophomore.

Elkan is a big-time racer who is coming off an all-state performance last year in cross country. Look for him to really make a splash when the lights are brightest this season.
