NCHSAA 4A State Championship Meet Preview

Boys Field

The field events will be very exciting with some of the nations best squaring off in most of the events.

Boys High Jump

We have three athletes tied for the state lead at 6-8 in Charles McBride (Apex), Randolph Ross (Garner) and Idris Bernard (Mallard Creek).  McBride won outdoor nationals in this event last year, but hasn't won a state title yet.  Ross took home the indoor title and Bernard the outdoor title in 2018.  Their overall PRs are 7-0.25, 6-10.75 and 6-10 respectively for McBride, Ross and Bernard.  All three are contenders for a national title this year, but first will have to win the state.

Boys Shot Put

Timon Edelen (Wakefield) won the event last year, but Mason Ellis (West Forsyth) comes in as the favorite at 60-3.5.  Edelen holds a seasons best a 53-9 and Chancelor Crawford (Mallard Creek) also comes in at 53-8.  Nathan Myers (West Forsyth) has also eclipsed the 53 foot mark at 53-0.  Ellis threw 60-3.5 early in the season and has consistently been over 55 feet the rest of the year.  The top three boys threw head to head at the Eastern HS Challenge last week and Ellis won at 57-2.  

Boys Long & Triple Jump

We'll see two of the countries beast in Eric Haddock (Southeast Raleigh) and Christopher Alexander (Rocky River) jump head to head for the 4A horizontal jump titles.  Haddock comes in as the favorite in the long jump as Alexander comes in as the triple jump favorite.  Haddock has jumped 24-5 in the long jump this year to Alexander's 23-3.  Alexander holds a season best in the triple jump of 49-3.5 to Haddock's 47-8.75.  

Boys Pole Vault

Spencer Evans (Lake Norman) holds the best mark in the state this season of 15-5.  The junior jumped 16-1.25 last year as a sophomore.  He missed some time due to injury and has jumped 14-6 and 14-5.25 the last two weeks.  Ellis Woodyard (Broughton), Tommy Keech (Wakefield) and Chandler Ward (Ragsdale) have all cleared 14 feet at 14-7, 14-1 and 14-0 respectively.
