This year's NCHSAA 1A State Championship is set to be a day filled with close battles and impressive performances across the board. While every event poses a certain level of entertainment and competitiveness, several stand out on paper. Let's look at six events and matchups that have the potential to break records and produce quality race strategies.

Boys Discus Throw

On the field side of this 1A State Championship session, the boys' discus throw and girls' triple jump are filled with tight matchups and impressive performances from this 2025 outdoor season.

Starting off with the boys' discus throw, Nse Uffort is seeded at an impressive 174-05 mark. However, Uffort has thrown farther this season with his 181-11 foot effort from the Franklin Panther Invitational. Even more impressively, Uffort's personal best in the event sits at 190 feet 3 inches. The 1A state meet record sits at 172-11 feet from Jeese Shelton in 2023. Uffort's consistency and high-caliber abilities have the potential to surpass that mark this coming weekend.

Girls Triple Jump

The second field event is the girls' triple jump. Another state meet record looks to be in danger with the likes of Amari Baldwin in this field. The girls' triple jump 1A state meet record sits at 39-09.25, set by Zoie Shuler in 2022.

Baldwin jumped a new personal best of 39-0.5 at this year's 1A West Regional meet, showing she is in her best form yet. Baldwin has also shown impressive consistency, which will certainly come in handy in such a high-pressure meet this coming weekend.

Additionally, the next three girls-Sarah Hargro, Aniya Hawkins, and Kennedy Ware-have all jumped within 35 ft this season, which will make the podium positioning interesting to watch.

Boys 4x800 Meter Relay

The top five teams in this boys' race are separated by only five seconds. Union Academy leads the charge with a season-best performance of 8:18.37. Corvian Community School is the second team under 8:20 this season and looks to be the most dangerous threat to Union Academy.

Barely a second behind Corvian Community School is Robbinsville, who are led by Nathan Frederick with his 1:59 (800) personal best. Also look out for Christ the King Catholic School and Elkin, seeded fourth and fifth.

Girls 4x100 Meter Relay

We've got another state meet record watch in this girls' relay event. The current 1A state meet record is held by Winston-Salem Prep from 2012 with their 48.51 mark.

Top-seeded Mountain Island Charter School comes in with a season-best performance of 48.30. They are led Olivia Patterson with a 12.16 (100) meter personal best Behind Mountain Island Charter School sit Corvian Community School and Perquimans County, with season-best efforts of 48.99 and 49.69 respectively. Such close season-best marks will make for highly contested top positions this coming weekend.

Boys 1600 Meter Run

These distance boys really know how to run fast. Carson Williams comes with impressive personal bests of 1:53 for 800 meters and 4:12 for the mile at the All-American Track Classic. However, he is only seeded at 4:24 over 1600 meters.

The top six positions in this race are separated by only four seconds, which could result in some interesting race dynamics. In addition to Williams, Andrew Harding and Ogana Swimmer have both run 4:16 for 1600 meters this season. Harding also brings impressive aerobic strength to this field with his 8:59 personal best over 3200 meters.

Girls 400 Meter Run

This girls' field is led by Aniya Edwards from Elkin with an impressive 56.63 (400) meter personal best. The Elkin senior has the potential to threaten the 1A state meet record of 56.16, set by Edwards herself in 2024.

Edwards has a large gap between the rest of the field as the second seed. Braelyn Waldeck owns a 58.12 personal best over one lap, with Kaydence Menifee a second behind in 59.11 (400). Beautiful Peterson and Carrington Hernandez round out the top five seeds in this race, along with all of the sub-60-second performers this season.
