Cummings, T.W. Andrews Dominate NCHSAA 2A Team Battle

Results

Cummings girls and T.W. Andrews boys put on a dominant performance yesterday at the NCHSAA 2A State Championships.  Cummings scored 103 points finishing 63 ahead of runner-up North Carolina School of Science and Math who scored 40, while T.W. Andrews scored 98 with East Burke having a strong showing in second place with 52 points.

Cummings were led by sophomore star D'Anna Cotton who won four events totaling 40 points which would have tied for first in the team title on her own!  She Ran 14.78 to win the 100m Hurdles, 44.68 to win the 300m Hurdles, jumped 5-8 to win the High Jump and won the Triple Jump in 39-0.5.

Behind Cotton in the 300mH was Honesti Trollinger who finished 2nd in 46.48, and in the Triple Jump Diamond Moore and Brooke Packingham made it a 1-2-4 finish for Cummings with jumps of 38-0 and 36-11.  Moore and Packingham would also go 1-3 in the Triple Jump with marks of 18-9.5 and 17-7.5.  Moore and Taylor Jordan would also join Cotton in the 100m Hurdle scoring running 15.12 and 15.21 for 2nd and 4th overall.

Cummings would also have a strong day in the relays winning the 4x200m in 1:42.24 with Jordan, Packingham, Trollinger and Moore and take 3rd place in the 4x100m with Jordan, Jones, Packingham and Trollinger.

This marks the 17th NCHSAA Outdoor Team Title for Cummings since 1987 on the girls side!  They are super young with Cotton being only a sophomore and don't lose many of their top point scorers.  This should only be the beginning for this era of the Cummings program.

T.W. Andrews were led by Correy McManus and Ja'Neil Harris who kicked off the competition with a 1-2 finish in the 100m Dash Finals where McManus dove across the line to edge Harris in 10.72 to 10.75.  Later in the meet they'd do the same but in reverse order as Harris would run a season best of 21.12 with McManus taking 2nd in 22.06.

Both boys would be apart of their winning 4x100m and 4x200m relay squads that both ran season bests en route to relay state titles with marks of 42.14 and 1:26.85 finishing just ahead of Farmville Central in both.

They'd have strong showings in the hurdles as well with Jeremiah King and Zaman Timmons bringing home a 3-6 finish in the 110m Hurdle finals running 14.51 and 15.24 respectively.  The 300m Hurdles would go even better as King, Gracious Chia and Timmons would net a 2-3-4 finish running 38.91, 39.78 and 40.75.  Timmons would also bring home a 6th place finish in the Triple Jump with a mark of 43-4.5.

They'd score well in the middle distance events as well with Lilen Ratley running a season best to finish 5th overall in the 800m Run with a 2:00.80 and Joshua Pratt running 50.57 to finish 8th in the 400m.  They'd also be apart of their 4x800m that kicked off the day running an 8:23 to finish 4th and their 4x400m which would finish 8th running 3:32.39.

T.W. Andrews boys were a powerhouse winning 8 NCHSAA 3A Team titles from 1988-2001.  After a 23 year drought the program is pack and succeeding at the highest level it ever has after a dominant performance yesterday.  They won the NCHSAA 1A/2A Indoor State Championship this winter as well.
