Five Takeaways From Providence Cross Country Invitational

Weddington Girls versus Cuthbertson Girls Is The Rivalry of the Decade

The first of many battles this season between the girls of Weddington and Cuthbertson took place this morning and it did not disappoint.

These two programs are both in the 4A Southern Carolina Conference. You read that correctly, these two juggernauts are in the same conference!

Weddington took home the conference title last season over Cuthbertson, 31-40. Cuthbertson's Madeline Hill and Alyssa Preisano went 1-2 in the race.

We can say that a few more times in fact, as Hill and Preisano went on to go 1-2 at the NCHSAA 3A Midwest Regional and the NCHSAA 3A State Championship!

With bigger and bigger fields throughout the postseason, Cuthbertson took advantage of that 1-2 punch. The Cavaliers took home the 3A Midwest title 29-34, and went on to win the 3A state title 31-46, with Weddington in 2nd both times. The next closest team at the state meet was Marvin Ridge (who is also in the same conference as Weddington and Cuthbertson) with 106 points.

Today's race was tighter than any from last season.

Cuthbertson's Preisano was the first to cross the line for either squad finishing 4th. They alternated from 4th-8th with Cuthbertson going 4-6-8 and Weddington 5-7. Cuthbertson's No. 4, Justine Preisano, finished 21st, which left a gap for the Warriors of Weddington to strike.

Grace Hanson was 11th and Audrey Wright was 18th overall with their No. 5, Alyx Beausoleil, right behind in 24th.

Cuthbertson's No. 5 Charli Montalvo was 29th.

Weddington won the first matchup of 2021 by only 3 points, 65-68!

It is worth noting that Cuthbertson's returning No. 5, Marissa Bosland, did not run, could she have made the difference?
