Akala Garrett has been on fire to start her season! The sophomore has won all seven races she has competed in this outdoor season so far. Garrett has had to make a lot adjustments to her training, as her school's track had severe water damage from their football field, making it almost unusable.
Here's a look at the Harding University High School Track guys and girls. Thanks for the equity CMS. This was cut due to drainage issues from the football field waterlogging the track. Same old story. It's a damn shame point blank and period. Why can't Harding have the basics? pic.twitter.com/qjwXAU5EP4
Garrett has raced the 100m twice, the 200m twice, the 800m once, and the 400m hurdles twice so far this season, all in South Carolina. Her 58.76 time in the 400m hurdles at the Youth Diamond League Series is good for a US No. 1 and NC No. 4 All Time. The three names ahead of Garrett are some of the most notable NC alumni of all time: Anna Cockrell, Latoya James, and 100m hurdles world record holder Keni Harrison. Garrett is not alone in NC, as Providence Day School's Falon Spearman broke the 1:00 mark in the 400m hurdles this weekend as well.
Millbrook's Dillon Leacock broke 54 seconds again the 400m hurdles this weekend, setting the tone for the rest of his season. Leacock is currently NC No. 1 and US No. 1 this season, and NC No. 18 All Time, with a lot of time to shoot up the leaderboard.
