The NCHSAA 4A State Championship Lived Up To The Hype

Boys Sprints and Hurdles:

100 meter

With five runners clocking times under 10.8 in their respective regionals, this was bound to be a competitive race. Jaylen Coleman (Porter Ridge) was the fastest qualifier out of the morning's prelims running a 10.94 into a -1.0 wind index. Advancing to the afternoon's finals with Coleman were Evan Pryor (Hough), Isai'as Robinson (Overhills), Cameron Rose (Hickory Ridge), Romell McRae (Southeast Raleigh), Khafre Brown (West Mecklenburg), Rondell Terry (Garner), and Kobe Barnes (Wakefield). In the final Coleman would prove his top prelim time was no fluke and held off final a push from the freshman Pryor to capture his first career state championship. Pryor, Robinson, and Rose finished 2-3-4 to earn All-State honors.

200 meter

After a tight first 100 meters between all the competitors it was Cameron Rose, Romell McRae, and Randolph Ross (Garner) that started pulling away from the field. A final lean by Rose gave him the narrow victory over McRae and Ross clocking 21.74. McRae was your runner up finishing in 21.79 and Ross was just one-hundredth of a second behind finishing 3rd in 21.80. Isai'as Robinson finished 4th to claim the final All-State medal.

400 meter

In a battle between friends and Club Track teammates, Randolph Ross and Jalen Herring (Middle Creek) battled down to the final stride for the win. It was Ross however, who came up victorious tying his NC #1 mark from last week's regional of 47.58. Herring dipped under 48 seconds officially running 47.92. Anthony Morgan (Grimsley) and Reece Moulton (Hoggard) rounded out your top four.

110 meter hurdles

In the prelims, Bryce Anthony (Ragsdale) led the way with the fastest time of the morning running 14.68. Advancing to the finals with Anthony were Jeffrey Blake (Mooresville), Anthony Robinson (Cary), Quintavious Workman (Panther Creek), Alexander Nunley (Garner), Mekhi Dunlap (RJ Reynolds), Micah Hairston (Laney), and Asa Simmons (Ardrey Kell). In the finals it was Mekhi Dunlap who powered over the final few hurdles to take the victory in 14.46. The battle for second place was as tight as could be with three runners finishing within .01 seconds of each other. Robinson ended up capturing 2nd place in a time of 14.58, Anthony finished 3rd in 14.58 and Nunley rounded out the top four running 14.59.

300 meter hurdles

The competitors in this race knew it would take a new NC #1 to win this race and that is exactly what Dexter McDuffie (South Central) did with his 37.66. McDuffie pulled away from Caleb Mcmillan (Hough) down the stretch to hold on and finish his career as a state champion. Mcmillan finished in 38.28 to place 2nd. Jabari Dalton (South Mecklenburg) finished 3rd and Isaiah Smith (Mallard Creek) finished 4th.

Wheelchair 100/200 meter

Ladale Gambrell (Broughton) set 4A records in both the 100 meter and 200 meters clocking 21.70 and 46.59 respectively! Christopher Coke (Ragsdale) also competed in the 100 meter wheelchair finishing 2nd in 31.02!
