For years, Mallard Creek High School has been a dominant force in North Carolina Track & Field. With an elite coaching staff, a dedicated support system, and an abundance of talented student-athletes, the program has seemingly unlocked the key to sustained success.
Earlier in the 2025 indoor season, I visited a Mallard Creek track and field practice to get an inside look at what makes the program so special. From the moment I arrived, the coaching staff was welcoming and enthusiastic. I was given a tour of the academic building and introduced to many supporters of the program -- front office staff, teachers, athletic department personnel, trainers, and team parents. It was clear that the Mallard Creek community fully embraces and uplifts this team.
As soon as the student-athletes were released from class, they got straight to work. Many headed straight to the weight room, while those who had already lifted took time to stretch, roll out, or knock out some homework. After finishing in the weight room, the team moved to the track, where they completed warm-ups and received a quick message from Head Indoor Coach Antoine Sanders before splitting into groups.
The practice itself showcased the tight bond between athletes. They joked around and had fun, but when it was time to lock in, the focus was undeniable. Every athlete was putting in serious work.
My biggest takeaways? First, the incredible support system surrounding the program. Second, the deeply ingrained culture of hard work -- not just in track but in academics and personal development as well. But perhaps the most impressive thing I witnessed was the mutual respect between athletes and coaches. Every coach I spoke with raved about their athletes, and in return, every athlete spoke just as highly of their coaches.
Mallard Creek is an elite program with a legacy of excellence. And based on what I saw, that legacy isn't slowing down anytime soon. Check out the attached video to see what the Mallard Creek coaches and athletes have to say as well as a glimpse into their day-to-day practice.
