Gibbons Track Classic has been Cancelled due to weather
The Cardinal Gibbons Classic looks to have some very strong fields tomorrow night in the 1600 & 800, though the weather forecast doesn't look great. Regardless we still should see some awesome battles regardless of time.
Boys 1600
This is a premier mile field headlined by recent 1:51 and the National 800 Runner-Up Ian Delgado (Green Hope). In two races at Nationals Delgado split 1:50 and then ran 1:51 open the following day. Delgado said in interview he hoped to run some more miles this outdoor season after the event and this should certainly be a fast one. He holds a PR of 4:17 from last season. He'll face off against a strong field, athletes with their PRs listed below:
Ian Delgado - Green Hope - 4:17
Jamie Witmer - Hoggard - 4:18
Ares Epps - Green Hope - 4:19
Michael Moerk - Mount Tabor - 4:21
Anton Idhammar - Cary - 4:21
Hunter White - North Henderson - 4:22
Sean Petersen - Green Hope - 4:20 (Full Mile)
Brian Risse - North Lincoln - 4:22 (Full Mile)
Ben Verchick - Union Pines - 4:29
Sam Thornton - Cardinal Gibbons - 4:27.70 (Full Mile)
Chase Coley - Cary Academy - 4:25
Cameron Ponder ran a 4:13 to set a new US#1 last weekend, and with a strong field tomorrow we could see this mark be broken under the lights at Cardinal Gibbons.
Katherine Dokholyan 4:59 Mile from Raleigh Relays last spring
Girls 1600
The girls 1600 field is just as strong headlined by Katherine Dokholyan (Chapel Hill) who ran a 4:57 converted 1600 last year at Raleigh Relays. She'll have some strong competition pushing her including NCHSAA 4A XC State Champion Natalie Tyner (Laney) who ran 5:03.06 last year for the 1600. Laney doesn't compete in Indoor Track, so we haven't seen Tyner in a big race since the XC season.
It'll also feature Olivia Frazier (Cary Academy) who is a Field Hockey star that has had a lot of outdoor track success over the last two years holding a PR of 5:03. Also, Chandler Mccaslin (North Lincoln) has been running fantastic recently after running a big 1600 PR of 5:07 dominating at Marvin Ridge last weekend. How much faster will she be able to go against strong competition? Also Ainsley Cooper (Reagan) dominated the 3200 running a PR of 11:13.49 in a solo effort. She holds a 1600 PR from her sophomore indoor season of 5:07.
Girls 800
Indoors we saw Megan Marvin (Chapel Hill) win the indoor 3A 500 title running 1:17.66 finishing with only 1 shoe! She'll face off with another 1:17 500 girl in Kaleigh Hanson (Croatan) in the 800 tomorrow night. Hanson was the NCHSAA 2A 800 Champion last spring running 2:19, while Marvin holds an 800 PR of 2:16 from her freshman year and seems to be in event better form based off her indoor season!
Boys 800
We'll see a handful of sub 2 minute 800 runners battling tomorrow night headlined by Michael Quispe (Croatan) who has run 1:57, Kobe Brown (Southwest Guilford) who ran 1:58 last summer and was the NCHSAA 3A 1000 runner up, as well as Jarred Komyati (Panther Creek), Tashaune Kyle (Mount Tabor) and Hunter White (North Henderson). This should be a fast one and has no clear favorite up front to take the win.
