Kiya Oviosun 53.53 for the upset at NCHSAA 4A States Last Fall
Girls 400
The state has never had a stronger contingent of 400 meter runners at one time, even if you don't include 8th grader Kayla Davis (Run U Xpress) who has already broken the 400 state record as a 7th grader running 52.54 last summer. The state also returns NC#4 All-Time Kiya Oviosun (Southeast Guilford), NC#5 All-Time Alysia Johnson (Hillside) NC#8 All-Time Maya Singletary (Hoke County) and the new 500m Indoor State Record holder Kyna Robinson (Southeast Raleigh) who has run 54.94 for 400. Ovioson, Johnson and Singletary have run 53.53, 53.87 and 54.09 respectively.
All four of these girls can break Demetria Washington's (Terry Sanford, 1997) High School State Record of 52.74. Davis has run 52.54 but isn't technically the high school state record since she is still in 7th grade. It's a rare case that the middle school state record would be the overall state record, but Davis is a freak athlete.
Singletary and Robinson had a legendary battle indoors in the 500 where they both were under the previous 500 state record running 1:12.33 and 1:12.61 respectively. Race video below.
Hopefully we get to see these superstars square off many times over the outdoor season. It's certainly the race of the meet anytime two of these 5 girls are slated to face off against each other.
