Senior Spotlight: Jesse Freeman

The Harnett Central senior is one of the state's most versatile athletes, one of only 6 that have competed in the decathlon.

I have always had a special admiration for athletes that compete in the multi-events (decathlon, heptathlon, pentathlon, etc.).  While most track athletes only perform in one class of events, or maybe learn a field event or two to go with their running events, a decathlete has to be competitive in every type of event: hurdles, sprints, distance, horizontal jumps, vertical jumps, throws.  Jesse Freeman (Harnett Central) has competed in the decathlon (during his sophomore year), and his score would make him one of the top 40 returners in the nation this year.  Freeman is also one of the top high jumpers in the state, having cleared 6' 6" both last spring and this past winter.  If he can match that height at the state meet, he will be right in the mix for the state title.  If he can find the right spot to land in college, he can continue to develop as a decathlete, and if his work ethic is any indication, he will have success there.
