Virginia\'s Andrew Dumm led a 1-2-3 finish in the men\'s 5K, running a stunning 14:07, 22 seconds below his previous best mark, to lead a sweep of the medals and to help the Cavalier men finish fourth at the 2006 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, NC. Dumm\'s time not only qualified him for the Regional meet but also moved him into the No. 5 position all-time in Virginia history. Kevin McHale took home third in both the 800m and the 1500m runs as the men went 3-4-6 in the two-lapper while Andrew Jesien teamed with McHale to go 3-6, giving the Cavalier men 78 points in the five distance events, or 40% of the total points scored.

Virginia\'s Ryan Foster led a 1-3-5 finish in the men\'s 10K as the All-ACC and All-Regional performer won his first individual ACC title with a 30:20.72 effort, helping Virginia to stand in third at the conclusion of the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Teammate Andrew Dumm earned All-ACC honors with his third-place finish, coming in at 30:29.11. Taylor Smith finished fifth overall at 31:18.88, as the Cavaliers were the only school to have more than two scorers in the event. On the women\'s side, Kara Scanlin finished fourth with a 36:04.97, just ahead of teammate Laura Hodges, who ran 36:13.53.

With four scorers returning from the NCAA Regional meet in which the Cavaliers narrowly missed a berth to the NCAA meet, excitement abounds for the Virginia women\'s cross country team as they head into the 2005 season. Three All-Regional performers are back on the roster as the Cavaliers look to return to the NCAA meet, including Emily Harrison, who represented the USA at the North American, Central America, and Caribbean Cross Country Championships after qualifying for the NCAA meet in her first year as a collegiate harrier.

The Cavaliers will combine a veteran roster with a solid group of incoming athletes to make their move back into the nation\'s elite. While the Hoos have a veteran core, they are still a young team as the only senior in eligibiility on the squad is Shannon Hawrylo, who earned All-Regional honors in 2004 en route to a breakout season on the track in 2005. Hawrylo qualified for the NCAA regional meet outdoors in May and has used that as a solid base to prepare for the 2005 upcoming season. \"Shannon\'s spring has really set her up well for a great fall this season,\" said Virginia head coach Jason Dunn. Hawrylo\'s classmate Kara Scanlin, a red-shirt junior, is back after losing the last two years to injury, and the Cavaliers hope that she will return to the success of her first year, in which she earned All-ACC and All-Region honors in cross country. Joining these two is classmate Laura Hodges, also a red-shirt junior, who has varisty experience from thhe last two seasons.

Eighteen University of Virginia track and field student athletes will compete this weekend (May 27-28) at the NCAA East Regional, part of the process of qualifying for the NCAA National Championship. The East Regional is hosted by Manhattan College and held at Icahn Stadium on Randall\'s Island, NY. Leading the Cavalier contingent is four-time ACC Champion and three-time NCAA Nationals qualifier Inge Jorgensen. Jorgensen, who has twice qualified for the US Olympic Trials in the javelin, is currently ranked fourth in the nation among collegiate athletes in her event. She leads the East Region while teammate Annie Bobiak is ranked ninth in the javelin. The Virginia women also feature rookie Billie-Jo Grant in the weight events, as Grant will compete in both the shot put and the discus. Grant already ranks in the top-three all-time at Virginia in both events, and she is ranked 18th in the nation, and third in the East, in the discus, the event she won at the ACC meet.

Virginia Tech had six athletes score points on the second day of the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Florida State\'s Mike Long Track. Other highlights included six Tech runners qualifying for Saturday\'s finals and several Hokies posting personal record times in the sprint and distance events. Tech\'s six scores today were Sven Hahn, Brian MacPhee, Jennifer Wade, Erin Mahony, Saskia Triesscheijn and Gunild Kreb. Hahn (Jr., Stutggart, Germany) placed third in the men\'s discus out of the 14 finishers with a throw of 178\' (54.25m). Hahn\'s third place finish earned him All-ACC honors and gave Tech six team points. Hahn is still the second-ranked men\'s discus thrower in the NCAA east region and ranks ninth in the nation.

Cavaliers Set School Record in Distance Medley and 400m UVA Press Release Mar 05, 2005

Virginia athletes set two school records this past weekend (March 4-5) as the Cavaliers competed at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. Kellen Blassingame, the school-record holder in the outdoor 400m, added the indoor crown to his collection. He added to the DMR record he helped set on Friday when the Virginia quartet of McGavock Dunbar, Blassingame, Jordan Orr and Alex Tatu set the school record in the distance medley. The DMR ran a 9:36.21 and finished seventh overall in the meet, just .01 seconds out of fifth place. They broke the record by 6.99 seconds and are currently ranked 11th nationally. Blassingame\'s 46.97 broke the school record set by Ben Kurgat in 1989 when Kurgat ran a 47.61. Blassingame\'s time earned him a provisional qualifying berth for the NCAA Championships.

Cavaliers Compete at ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships UVA Press Release Feb 18, 2005

The Virginia men\'s distance medley team of Alex Tatu, Kellen Blassingame, McGavock Dunbar and Walt Kingsbery took home second place at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships today in Chapel Hill, NC. The foursome ran a 9:53.77, just 1.5 seconds off the ACC meet record set three years ago. David Sullivan also won silver today, clearing the pole vault with a 5.00m (16\' 4.75\"). The men\'s team stands in fifth place overall after two days of competition with 20.5 points.

Virginia\'s Emily Harrison places eighth at 2005 USA Junior XC Championships UVA Press Release Feb 13, 2005

Virginia first-year Emily Harrison, who earned All-ACC and All-Regional honors while advancing to the NCAA Championships in her first year as a collegiate runner in 2004, finished eighth at the USA Junior Women\'s National Championships, held in Vancouver, Wash. The first six athletes were named to the Junior National team that will compete in the 2005 World Championships in France.
