For a year the Fayetteville-Manilus boys team had to answer repeated questions about what they didn’t have, or who. They had a season to run and everyone else could worry that they housed the best runner in the state who wasn’t healthy enough to race.
I can’t lie. I was ready to go home. Then I woke up at 7 a.m. and heard the pouring rain and thought to myself, “I wonder if they’d actually let us skip Woodstock.”
Today went pretty slow at first. My cabin, boys Cabin 1 went out to a loop they call McKay. That’s because there’s a ridiculous hill on McKay Street. I couldn’t run it this year but I remember last year feeling like I should have come with hiking gear. Our counselor Sean Brosnan bet the entire camp couldn’t beat him up the hill, also called McKay. Hey look, no one said that runners like variation.
Today started the good stuff. All week I’ve been hearing about pranks and gags that cabins are plotting against each other and for the first couple days nothing happened. Until today.
One of the additions to camp this year are wristbands. Every camper gets one. Well, except for my cabin mate, Bernard England (Easton, Pa.) because he was dead to the world when co-director Bart Sessa came to our cabin to hand them out. Anyway, there are 10 different bands, each with a different inscription. Mine says, “iRun… can u?”

The state championships, any championship competition,is supposed to be a who’s who in the sport. But because the Adidas Grand Prix lands on the same weekend at the New York State championships, part of the discussion will be who’s absent.
RANDALLS ISLAND – Donald Williams, Jr. admitted that he went to bed near tears Saturday night. The Midwood senior captain twisted his right ankle running down the stairs at home and knew that without him, his team’s chance of winning a city title would vanish as quick and he could run100 meters.
RANDALLS ISLAND – Sometimes there’s no need for a post-race analysis. Cardozo coach Gail Emmanuel went with her first reaction when Chamique Francis crossed the line in 100 meters.
MIDDLETOWN – Ryan Brennan kept looking over his shoulder. It didn’t matter how fast the Monroe-Woodbury junior ran. He knew Newburgh’s Randy Patterson was coming. “He makes a living out of walking people down,” Brennan said. “I couldn’t believe I hadn't seen him yet.”
Garden City’s Emily Menges, a Georgetown-bound senior, dragged her standout middle-school teammates through 800 meters on the first day of the Section 8 state qualifier. While Menges powered through her best race of the season, seventh-grader Emma Gallagher and eighth-grader Katie O’Neill scurried to keep up like kids following their mom at the mall.
WARWICK – Warwick Valley senior Charlie Armand turned to Ryan Brennan of Monroe-Woodbury and set the tone for the race with a few quick words. “I’m taking out really hard and I want you right with me,” Armand said.
Deajah Stevens isn’t a regular freshman. She walked in the door at Mount Vernon already one of the top sprinters in the state even before she put on a uniform.
LAGRANGEVILLE – A group of friends and Mamaroneck teammates gathered around a panting Anima Banks to tell her how “awesome” she is. Banks was still trying to gain her composure and accept what she’d done.
Anyone could make the argument that Columbus senior Whitney Fountain is the best short sprinter in New York State. The only argument is that she isn’t as visible as some other high-profile athletes.
RANDALLS ISLAND – After Olivia Abbate won the 100 hurdles at the CHSAA championships for the third straight year, she hugged an assistant coach until the two of them tumbled over laughing. When her team won the 4x100 she was the first to the finish line to hug a younger teammate anchoring a championship relay.
