Each Thursday we'll feature Future Stars who are sophomore year or younger including middle school. We'll look at recent performances and give some insight to their running careers thus far dating back to middle school if we have that information. This week we feature two freshman who are coming of some really strong performances!
Adam Foley (Pinecrest)
North Carolina has a really strong group of freshman boys moving from the middle school to high school ranks with Joshua Palmer, Nathan Vo and Gavin Clewley all being sub-10 3200m runners as 8th graders. Adam Foley moved from Illinois this summer to Pinecrest ahead of his freshman year after a great track season running 2:01.40 in the 800m and 4:13.78 for the 1500m (~4:33 for the 1600m). He tells us he will be able to run for Pinecrest during the track season. He kicked off his fall season in Virginia last weekend running 15:28 for 3 Miles which would be right around 16:00 for 5K showing he has great range beyond his mid-distance accolades!
Colby McCollum (Cuthbertson)
After graduating a stellar senior class Cuthbertson needed some runners to step up to keep the distance power house rolling. Freshman Colby McCollum has played a big part of that and ran 18:04 yesterday at the Union County XC Championships on the pancake course at McAlpine, which is run without the hill. She finished as the Cavaliers second runner as the team took home the team title. She ran 18:46 last weekend at Great American to finish as the teams top runner as well as 18:46 at Hare & Hounds on the regular McAlpine course. McCollum was great over her middle school career running 2:21.53 for 800m and 5:09.14 for the Full Mile at the NCRunners Elite Tune-Up as well as an 11:09 2 Mile at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. McCollum is one of three freshman in Cuthbertson's top 7 this fall as the Cavaliers look to keep the distance powerhouse rolling!
