Although with the cold temperature the times from last year weren't as fast overall up front, it ended up still being the deepest field in meet history with 63 boys under the 10 minute barrier, and many PRs amongst the field.  Tanis Baldwin, Philip Hall, Kyle Christ, Kenny Kneisel, Nick Linder, and Zach Boone were the six that broke away and were towards the front of the field during the race.  The goal was to break or run close to the 9 minute mark, but with no one wanting to take it out during the early stages of the race it hindered that barrier from being broken,  Tanis Baldwin lead through the mile in 4:40 as the six had begun to break away from the rest of the field.  As leaders saw that the pace was slow things started to pick up a bit as the lead went back and forth amongst the leaders and the pace began to quicken.
