NCHSAA Girls 3A State Championships Preview

Sprints

55m Dash

Taylor Henderson (Eastern Guilford) comes in with the fastest FAT mark of the season with a 7.38 and looks to be the favorite heading into Saturday afternoon.  But Tara Jones (Ashbrook) is the top returner after a 5th place finish last year and sits 3rd in 3A with a 7.40 FAT mark this season.  Destiny Shaver (West Rowan) has run a 7.40 this season as comes in as the second seed.  The entire field comes within .2 seconds of each other and any other the twelve girls entered have a chance at winning.

300m Dash

Samara Gibson (Corinth Holders) has the fastest mark of the indoor season at 41.04, but that was a hand-held mark.  Her fastest FAT mark is 41.82 which is 3rd fastest in 3A.  Micheala Nelms (Nash Central) and Jorja Medders (Marvin Ridge) come in ranked ahead of Gibson at 41.76 and 41.77 respectively making them the only 3 3A girls under 42 this indoor season. Tara Jones (Ashbrook) is the top returner, but hasn't been run under 43 this season and is the 29th of 31 scheduled entries in the event.

500m Dash

Jorja Medders (Marvin Ridge) is the top seed in this event narrowly ahead of Sarah Bechtel (Weddington) as both have run in the 1:19s this season.  Bechtel is more of a 1000m/1600m runner and I wouldn't be surprised to see her scratch this event.  Defending Champion Mackenzie Whitaker (West Carteret) will be back to defend her title as she was able to outlast Medders last indoor season for the state title by .09 seconds.  Carisha Leonard (Nash Central) and Freshman Megan Marvin (Chapel Hill) are also slated to compete to in the final section.

55m Hurdles

Randi Yeomans (West Carteret) took 2nd in this event last season and is going to be the top returner heading into Saturday.  She is the only 3A girl that is under 9 seconds under FAT timing this indoor season at 8.85 with Guyah Love (Ashbrook) entered as the second fastest competitor at 9.01.  Jaelyn Warren (Cuthbertson), Myka Hedgepeth (Nash Central) and Mackenzie Whitaker (West Carteret) have all been under 9 seconds under hand timing and will look to do so for the first time under FAT timing on the biggest stage.
