JDL Fast Track High School Kick-Off (Winston-Salem, NC)
Coverage
Girls Highlights
-
Jacklyn Howell (Southeast Raleigh) had a huge day, running a state-leading 8.15 to win the 55 Hurdles and 41.32 for the victory in the 300. McKinley McNeill (Platinum Sports) and Jocelyn Culbreath (Reagan) were just behind, running 41.43 and 41.47, respectively.
-
Layla White (Cary) clocked 1:16.93 in the 500, winning by over four seconds. That sets the standard nationally for the early season, though many states are not yet competing.
-
Chloe Cox (South Central) posted the state's best FAT 1000 mark, edging Anna McElrath (Independence) 3:10.28 to 3:10.65.
-
Elly Henes (Green Hope) and Malia Ellington (Community School of Davidson) dueled throughout the 1600, with Henes claiming the win in 5:07.57 (with a victory margin of 0.03!). Grace Sullivan (Providence) ran 5:09.79 to finish third. Ellington also ran 11:23.16 to win the 3200.
-
Cary's girls ran 4:02.43 for the 4x400 and 10:05.12 for the 4x800, claiming the wins and the state lead in both relays. Green Hope's girls were right behind in the 4x800, clocking 10:05.98.
-
Sydnei Murphy (Apex) got two wins, blasting to 7.18 in the 55 Dash (7.16 in the prelims) and then 17' 10.5" in the long jump. She now leads the state in both events, though her season best in the long jump is an 18' 3" she posted while competing unattached last weekend.
-
Freshman Kayla Moore (Cummings) had a strong day, winning the triple jump with a leap of 35' 11.75", and also claimed second place in the 55 Hurdles and the long jump. Ditto for senior Hunter Welborn (Starmount), who made her indoor debut with a strong 5' 6" clearance in the high jump (plus a good attempt at 5' 8") and showed her versatility by finishing second in the triple jump.
-
Bryanna Hames (Myers Park) made it clear that she is not just a discus thrower, tossing the 4K sphere 41' 2.5" to earn the top spot in the state rankings.
Boys Highlights
-
Jahmaal Daniel (Terry Sanford) showed that he is ready for the season, dominating the 55 Dash with a 6.36 - just 0.01 off of his PR from last year. That is the top time in the nation so far, although it is very early in the indoor season. Daniel Estrada (Platinum Sports) ran 6.48 to finish second, continuing the surge he began in the late spring.
-
Kimani Hoffman (Knightdale) picked up where he left off last spring in the triple jump, going 47' 2" (almost a PR) on his first attempt. That was good enough for the win, and he also jumped 22' 3.5" to take the gold in the long jump. Add in a 6.55 in the prelims of the 55 Dash, and that's a very nice day, indeed.
-
Jamaree Murray (Southeast Raleigh) ran 35.02 for the 300, making him the state leader so far this winter. Saadiq Sweezer (Eastern Alamance) clocked 35.87 to finish second, and he also posted a win in the 500 with his 1:06.86, edging LeAndre McGill (Northeast Guilford).
-
Zach Boone (Mitchell) pulled off double wins, running 4:33.27 in the 1600 and 9:49.54 for 3200. Josh Barrett (Cary) took the 1000 by holding off Walter Johnson (Pine Forest), both of them running in the 2:37's.
-
Asheville's boys ran 8:37.66 to win the 4x800 over North Meck (8:28.97), while Southeast Raleigh ran an impressive early-season time of 3:25.75 in the 4x400.
-
Alex Tate (Marvin Ridge) had a breakthrough, improving his PR by four feet with a mark of 53' 1". In the process, he laid down the gauntlet for the other 3A throwers, including Mateius Brown (Western Harnett), who finished second in this meet. Tate's teammate Ronald Campbell won the pole vault with a clearance of 13' 6", which gives the Mavericks a great 1-2 punch in the field events.
