Davis leads Jacksonville to cross country win
September 15,2006

Kaitlyn Davis’ first-place performance sparked the Jacksonville girls cross country squad to victory Thursday afternoon in a three-team Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference meet with White Oak and Hoggard at Onslow Pines Park.

Davis, a freshman, crossed the finish line in a time of 20 minutes, 35 seconds. White Oak’s Sarah Hart was second, coming in three seconds behind Davis.

Jacksonville’s Bryanna Henderson, Erin Putnam and Rachel Johnston rounded out the top five.
“We ran well, but we do need some work to do,” said Cardinals head coach Tim Hood. “Our first three girls ran really well, but we are looking for the 4-8 runners to step up for us to reach our potential.

“They have been doing really good so far.”
White Oak’s Andre Smith was the individual champion in the boys race, finishing in a time of 17 minutes. The rest of the top five featured runners from Hoggard, which emerged as the team champion.

“The boys times were not really impressive, but the girls were not too bad, considering the conditions,” Hood said of Thursday’s rain. “It was a sloppy course and muddy in parts.”

White Oak will host a MEC meet next Thursday, which will also feature Jacksonville, Hoggard at New Hanover.
