Boys Preseason All-Classes Team Rankings

You probably guessed the #1 team in the rankings by now, but now spots 16-25 are revealed as well.

The list began with the returning 5000 rankings from the 2011 cross country season, and then modifications were made based on improvements during the spring track season, runners lost, and recent program history. Teams were divided into tiers based on their score in the returning rankings (given in bold within each team's box), then sorted within each tier.  In some cases, a team with many signs of improvement was moved up to a higher tier.  Bonus consideration was given to teams with tight packs (at least 3 of the top 5 within 30 seconds of each other) and front runners (under 16 minutes for boys, under 18:45 for girls).  Subscribers can view the statistics that were used in the rankings process:

1. Chapel Hill

When a program can lose their #1 runner and still rank at the top of the next season's preseason list, then you know they have both quality and depth.  Chapel Hill returns eight runners who broke 17 minutes last year, with 6 of them under 16:40.  Although track season is not traditionally a big thing for any but the top Tiger runners, there is evidence of improvement from outdoors.  Top returner Chris Reeder ran 1:54, 4:30, and 9:33 in a season that shows he is ready to evolve into one of the state's top 5 individuals; at the other end of their top 7, Drew Roeber ran 4:38.  Behind Reeder, Chapel Hill's 2-6 runners are only separated by 20 seconds in their PR times, and 3-7 by only 10 seconds; if that pack can train and improve together this summer, this will be a very difficult team to defeat.  Add in the likelihood that they will add another young talent, which seems to happen pretty much every year, and you can see that this is clearly the best team in the state on paper (although their lead over the second-ranked team is not nearly as large as is the girls' #1 team).  The Tigers are the early favorite to return to the top of the 3A ranks, despite what appears to be a strong year for that classification.

2. Weddington

If you only consider the top 5 runners, Weddington is as good as anyone: the Warriors return five guys under 16:50 and three under 16:30 (which only one other team in the state can claim).  They do have some depth issues, however, and need to develop at the 4-7 spots to maintain this high ranking and contend for a 3A championship.  They also did not have as much evidence of progress during the outdoor track season as some of the other teams on this list, although returning #3 runner Matt Burns did post a strong 4:31 mark for the 1600.  This program takes great pride on its summer effort, though, and that intangible quality reinforces their position in the rankings.  Just as departed #1 runner Jonathan Bivens made a big step forward last year, expect several runners to do the same this year (and their only other loss from last fall was their #7).  Staying healthy is the only thing Weddington needs to be in position for a monster season, and they do have the luxury of having two runners (Hunter Roark and Matt Glackin) in perfect position to develop into strong sub-16 front-runners.  If that happens, the Warriors have a chance to finish the season in the top spot.

3. Broughton

The teams ranked 3rd through 6th in this series are so close to each other, really any of them could have fallen into any spot.  What makes Broughton stick out as potentially the 3rd-best team in the state this year, then?  How about four returning runners who ran under 9:50 for the 3200, the top fleet of two-milers in the state during the spring season?  You could also consider the five returning runners under 4:33 in the 1600, also the best group in the state.  Although the Caps took the biggest hit from graduation of any team in our top 4 (they lost their first and third runners from the fall season), that kind of incredible improvement shows that they are ready to reload.  In particular, the arrival of John Dalton Rohr (4:22 for 1600), who ran for St. David's last fall, greatly bolsters their top 5.  Depth seems like it might be a bit of an issue behind their front five, but that can be solved with a strong summer, and this is a program whose tradition and attitude supports hard work and success.  Call Broughton the early favorites to repeat as 4A state champions, but it's really too early to anoint anyone just yet.

4. Pinecrest

It's a rare event in cross country, but it does happen from time to time, and it applies to Pinecrest this year: their entire top 7 from 2011 is back.  Not only that, but you would have to look hard to see anyone in that top 7 who didn't show signs of progress during outdoor track season.  Chris Kelly (9:59 for 3200), Beckett Killam (4:32 for 1600), Matt Harmody (10:23), Willim Proulx (10:34), Jacob Troutman (4:42), Will Pearson (4:44)...all of them put up strong times relative to their cross country marks from the fall.  Furthermore, this is a program that has won state championships in the past, and it looks like the Patriots are building toward another one.  In a year that is fairly wide-open for 4A schools (at least as it seems before the season starts), Pinecrest is one of at least 4 schools that can claim to be legitimate contenders right from the start.  It won't end this year, either: of the seven returning Pinecrest runners who ran under 17 last fall, five of them will be back for 2013, as well.  If the Patriots have a weakness, it is the lack of a front-runner, but they also have by far the tightest pack of runners on any of the boys' teams, with an astonishing 22 seconds separating the 5K PR's of their top 7 runners.  If even five of those seven improve by 15-20 seconds this year, that would make this team very hard to beat.

  7) Willim Proulx   16:56.00 120

5. T. C. Roberson

How many teams can lose their top two runners, still return 5 sub-17 guys, and start the next season ranked 5th in the state?  That's what T. C. Roberson has accomplished, and it's a testament to their depth and the strength of their program.  The Rams will be formidable this season despite lacking a true front-runner, as they should be able to run together as a pack and keep the score from their 4th and 5th runners lower than most teams.  Paul Kovach, Zach Houser, and Jesse Kovacs all had solid outdoor track seasons, but this program makes its biggest gains in the summer.  Statistically, this team scores almost exactly the same in the overall rankings as the teams ranked 3rd and 4th, and that means T. C. Roberson is as good a contender for the 4A title right now as anyone else.  If they can finish 3rd or better at the state meet, that would make three straight years in the top 3; talk about great performances when it matters most!  Don't be surprised if the Rams discover some young talent along the way, too, as the middle-school programs in the Asheville area have been active the last few years.

  7) Charles Harpe   17:12.00 174

6. Watauga

Watauga's boys return the best 1-2 combination of anybody in the state in Peter Vandenberg and Josh Anderson, although Peter is recovering from a rough track season in which he was hardly able to race.  On the other hand, all but one of the teams ranked ahead of the Pioneers have five returners who have broken 17 minutes; Watauga only has three.  Their returning 4 and 5 were very close, however, and reports from Boone say that Michael Holland is also on track to drop under.  It's a bit hard to measure their improvement over the spring, as several of their runners concentrated on the 1600 and/or the 800, but Bryan Brackney (4:35) and Dustin Hickernell (4:39) had solid outdoor seasons.  This program enjoys a double geographic advantage: they have some of the best weather in the state over the summer, and also some of the best running locations close by.  Don't discount the effect that lower temperatures have on summer training; one day last week, when the high was 87 in Winston-Salem and 84 in Asheville, it was 77 in Boone.  The Pioneers are proud participants in a program with one of the deepest and proudest traditions in our sport, and this looks like the best Watauga boys' team in years.

7. Providence Day

Although the loss of #2 runner Reed Payne was definitely a blow, Providence Day has the rest of their top 7 back this fall to continue their improvement.  After finishing 10th in the final rankings in 2011, the NCISAA 3A state champs are looking to show that a private school can hang with the public-school team.  In addition to front-runner Ben Huffman, who has the 6th-fastest returning time in the state, the Chargers saw significant improvement from Eric Wineteer and Nick Linder (10:04 for 3200) during the spring track season.  Their summer project should be closing the gap between their returning 4th and 5th runners; while they have enough firepower to defend their title with what they return, they will need their entire top 5 under 17 if they want to beat some of the top 3A and 4A teams and get into the final top 5.  The good news is, with three returners in the mid-17's plus up-and-comers like Jimmy Messmer (10:49 after running 18:37 in the fall), that seems like a possibility for Providence Day this fall.  Even more good news?  The Chargers should have their top four runners, and 5 of their top 7, back again for 2013.

  7) Eric Wineteer   17:57.38 416

8. Cardinal Gibbons

The defending 3A state champions took a big hit from graduation, losing their top three runners.  This is a deep program with a proud tradition, however, and so they don't fall too far in the preseason rankings.  Improvements during the spring from runners such as JT Klimek (10:02 for 3200) will help bolster the top 5, while someone like Harrison Dusek could develop into a top-7 runner after a solid outdoor track season.  This is a critical summer for  NIck Tyrey, the only senior among the returning top 5; he sat out much of the spring season, but if healthy he can definitely fill some of the empty shoes left by the graduated runners.  Although this might be a bit of transition year for the Crusaders, that could also bode well for 2013.  One thing is certain: any Cardinal Gibbons team is going to work hard, and its runners are going to get better, so don't count them out of contention this fall.

  Cardinal Gibbons 468
  1) Nick Tyrey   16:21.80 32
  2) Chase McCord   16:44.30 85

  7) Joey Wendt   17:32.00 279

9. Cary

Cross country success will be a family affair this fall for Cary, with four of their top 5 returning runners being named either "Abushouk" or "Tecle."  Of course, the most prominent of those is Bakri Abushouk, the #7 runner overall coming into the season.  Don't overlook the improvement of their other runners, however, especially Abel Tecle (9:33 for 3200 this spring) and Dean Abushouk (10:03).  The Imps return their top 4 intact from last year, and they should be very strong up front; their biggest need will be the development of depth after their top 5.  Cary has been hard to judge in the early part of the season, because the Muslim holiday of Ramadan (which includes fasting from sun-up to sun-down) fell in the month of August and had an effect on some team members' training.  Cary catches a bit of a break there this year, however, as Ramadan will be over on August 18, almost two weeks earlier than last year, and that should allow for complete recovery and solid training before the serious racing begins.  One other possible downfall for the Imps: injuries have hounded Bakri for the last few years.  If he can stay healthy, though, top 5 at the 4A state meet seems realistic.

  Cary 582
  1) Bakri Abushouk   15:47.10 6
  2) Abel Tecle   16:21.00 30
  3) Dean Abushouk   17:05.31 151

  6) Chris Johnson   17:48.95 363
  7) Judson MacDonald   18:20.00 538

10. Providence

Through four runners, the Providence boys are as strong as anyone we've ranked so far.  Front-runner Wyatt Maxey, the #5 returner in the state, continues to show signs of improvement; this spring, he put up a PR of 4:25 in the 1600.  The Panthers have three tightly-packed runners at 2-4, and both Joe Sullivan and Umang Damani ran well this spring.  The big question will be at places 5 through 7, where the returning list shows a big drop-off.  All it takes is for one young runner to step up and join the top 5, but even then an injury to the top 4 could be devastating to their season.  If a few runners can develop into the 17:00 range to back up what they have back, then this could be a very good year for Providence.

  Providence 621
  1) Wyatt Maxey   15:45.00 4
  2) Joe Sullivan   16:41.00 77
  3) Dylan Cohen   16:41.00 79
  4) Umang Damani   17:02.00 140

  6) Mclean Burleson   17:58.00 419
  7) Mitchell Costa   18:07.00 474

11. East Rowan

Despite losing three of their top seven from last fall, including their #1 and #3 runners, East Rowan has developed into a program that can reload from their solid depth and continue to have success.  This is the first team in the rankings that returns four sub-17 runners, although those times are bolstered by running on the lightning-fast (and possibly short) McAnderson Park course in Statesville.  Nonetheless, the Mustangs have enough returning talent to make them a strong candidate for a top-5 finish in the 3A state meet.  One big downside: they didn't show much improvement in the spring track season, and that means they really need a strong summer to propel them into cross country season.  They could also use a few more depth runners to move into competition for the 6 and 7 spots.  Althought East Rowan might not have the "big name" of some programs around the state, they have ranked in the top 10 for 3A teams since 2009, and the Mustangs will want to continue that forward momentum this fall.

  East Rowan 538
  1) Cal Meyers   16:22.00 33
  2) Conor Honeycutt   16:27.00 44

  7) Jason Troutman   18:01.30 442

Tier Four Teams: 715 - 813 points

12. Mount Tabor

Often in boys' distance running, the strongest teams are powered by senior runners.  That was the case for Mount Tabor's boys last fall, with their top 4 runners powering the Spartans to the overall #1 ranking and a second-place finish at the 4A state meet, a fantastic season by just about any standard.  Of course, those same seniors left a gaping hole to fill, but you can expect the Tabor juggernaut to roll on this year.  This program has arguably the deepest talent base in the state, with huge numbers on their team that ensure they can discover a few new talents every year.  They are a year-round program, as well, and so they often make big gains in the winter and spring; for example, Andrew Krivsky and Ian Milder showed that they are ready to step into top-5 roles during cross country season.  Although depth should not be a problem, this team will most likely lack front-running power, and that will probably hold them back from getting into the top 5 again this year.

  Mount Tabor 744
  1) Dalton Nickel   16:25.00 39
  2) Nathan Kirse   16:49.00 99

  7) Chris Manthey   18:53.00 787

13. South View

South View got hammered by graduation, losing their #1, #3, #4, and #6 runners from last year's team.  This is a squad with a large talent pool, however, and they always have returning depth to help step up and fill the gap.  They are difficult to rate this year, as their times are somewhat inflated by having their conference meet on a short Jack Britt course.  They have shown solid improvement in the spring, though, with David Guthrie, Michael Staples, and Austin Crawford all putting up times that indicate they are ready to step forward during the fall season.  Furthermore, this is a program that emphasizes summer training and cross country, and has pride and a high standard of success, and those factors can help mitigate the loss of graduated runners.  South View will have to rely more this year on their vaunted pack-running techniques, as they will not have a clear front-running race-winner like Josh Crawford, but that suits their returners just fine.  Last year's team finished a disappointing 11th at the state meet; although this year's edition is not a championship contender, don't be surprised if the Tigers corrects return to the top 10.

  7) Joe Cox   17:29.88 263

14. North Lincoln

I don't think any team showed as much improvement during the outdoor season as North Lincoln.  Despite losing regular top-5 runner German Perez, they will return 4 sub-4:45 milers (ranking them 2nd in the state) and 3 sub-10 3200 runners (also good for 2nd overall). The Knights return a lot of leadership from last fall's NCHSAA 2A state championship squad, and they have developed into a solid program with a culture of success.  Depth is a big concern, as after their top 3 there is some drop-off between every position; they will need some younger runners to step up and fill in the gaps.  With Andrew Fea, Ryan Shannon, and Chris Boyle up front, however, plus the continued improvement of Josh Mosteller, North Lincoln will be the heavy favorite repeat in 2A.

  North Lincoln 832
  1) Chris Boyle   16:39.00 69
  2) Ryan Shannon   16:45.00 86

  7) Gill Martin   18:51.99 779

15. Asheville School

A very strong spring season should have this private school eyeing a state championship this fall.  Led by Ben Fiedler, who has the #2 returning time in the state, the Blues will also benefit from the dramatic improvement of Paul Jordan this spring (9:39 for a full two miles).  In fact, their whole team showed strong development during track season, as they ranked third in the state for the team 3200 (when scored cross country style).  Factoring in Will Campbell (10:13) and Robert Cook (10:36), that gives the Asheville School a strong front four, plus two candidates to fill the #5 slot.  The team has good championship experience, as well, having finished third in the NCISAA 3A state meet last year and losing only their #3 runner from that squad.  Depth could be a concern if there are any injuries, but if the returning top 6 got in a good summer of training this could be a top-10 team by the end of the season.
