It should be very tough to beat the girls from Carrboro this coming year . . . and next year for that matter. The top 6 returning girls based on last year's times all come back for the next 2 years. This is also the same team that won by about 40 points last year. I will go ahead and say the Carrboro ladies are going to put together a pretty nice streak of state titles over the next few years. Not to mention, the Burch sisters who ran 5:38 and 5:53, don't graduate until 2013. With the addition of these two this is going to be a really special next couple of years if they can keep their team intact.
So, it doesn't look like anyone will challenge Carrboro for the state title unless some crazy things happen. Cuthbertson HS who is coached by the former Weddington HS coach, David Malady, should continue to improve. They were new last year but did well in their first year. Also, a few teams that were at the top, just behind Carrboro and Croatan last year will be in the mix once again. These teams are: North Lincoln, Salisbury, and Owen. The Shield sisters lead Salisbury and with a pretty solid 1-4 returning, they will be looking for a stronger 5th runner in order to compete for 2nd place. Another team that I think should be on the radar but seems to be consistently looking for those last couple scoring spots to run faster is Madison. They seem to have enough up front to be in the mix for 2nd, but will need more depth.

Looking at the top individuals for the upcoming 2A season . . . there look to be a few girls who run for the #1 spot. Caitie Byrd of North Henderson won the overall title last year and is back to defend her title. We'll give her the early nod since she did win last year and appears to be a strong XC runner. Finishing in 3rd last year but having the fastest returning time is Grace Morken from Carrboro. It seemed as if she had a tough state meet last year as I fully expected her to be closer to the front runners. A few other names to keep in mind based on last XC season would be: Julia Sloane of Northwood, Laura Hamon of Carrboro, and Laney Browder of Wilkes Central. These 3 had good track seasons as well and should keep them near the top of the 2A classification. If you're looking for a name that isn't on this list you have to go with Alex Tavenier of Northeastern HS. She ran 12:11 and 5:28 during track and those are the #1 and #3 returning times in those events for next year. Alex only placed 47th at last year's state meet, but if track shows anything, she'll be MUCH improved.

Okay, so the team title for the boys 2A looks like it could be a very close one this coming year. The Carrboro boys will be looking to match their girls and win their own state title, but it won't come quite as easy. Looking at the 2 highest ranked teams in the returning list, Lincolnton and Carrboro, they look very similar. Both are led by 3 seniors and then have 2 juniors following. Carrboro has more potential as they have 9 guys ahead of Lincolnton's #5. But with Travis Franklin of Lincolnton coming back as the #1 returning guy by time, their summer training could be pretty legit this year.
I'm not so sure about Central Davidson as I can't find anything from track. The next few teams based on last XC season and looking at track are probably: Cuthbertson, East Lincoln, Owen, & Surry Central. Cuthbertson showed improvement during track and looks like they could have a nice solid pack while East Lincoln and Surry Central will both be looking for at least one more runner to help with their scoring 5. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Surry Central is top 3 this year and may even challenge for the #1 spot.

Now for the fun part . . . individuals! I think this one is going to be up for grabs this year and most likely throughout the season you're going to see a number of runners who look the part.
Travis Franklin of Lincolnton ran 9:58 is the only runner returning with a sub-10 3200m time. Ryan Wallace of First Flight ran more 4:32-4:36 1600s than anyone in the history of the sport (kidding). However, it does show that he could be a very consistent runner, something needed to take the top spot at the XC state meet. Eric Williams of Northwood was only 22nd at last year's state meet but had a solid track season and should be near the top for XC. Salisbury's Philip Tonseth is at the top of my list as well based on his track times.
I'll be honest this list could go on of possible athletes who I think could be at the top of the 2A meet: Jacob Fulk, Levi Rolles, Alex Goden, Nathan Hatley, Robert Pahel-Short, Brather Cline . . . but I don't want to waste your time.
Just take a look at the returning top 15, solely based on time from last year.
