Future Stars: Amelia Medlin & Joshua Palmer

Amelia Medlin after a 3rd place finish at the NCHSAA 4A XC State Championships

Each Thursday we'll feature Future Stars who are sophomore year or younger including middle school.  We'll look at recent performances and give some insight to their running careers thus far dating back to middle school if we have that information.  This week we feature the top sophomore girl and top freshman boy at the NCHSAA XC State Championships on Saturday!

Amelia Medlin (Hoggard)

Amelia Medlin has been a star for Hoggard the last two seasons and had the best performance of her HS career on Saturday placing 3rd at the NCHSAA 4A State Championships in 18:09.  Medlin told us she came into the event with goals of being Top 10 (All-State) and surprised herself as she pulled away from a loaded chase pack just off the top 2 finishers in Sofi Alexander and Elle Dawson.  Just one week before Medlin placed 3rd at the NCHSAA 4A East Regional running 18:29 at WakeMed.  Medlin has put together a strong season ahead of championship season placing 4th at Friday Night Lights, 4th at adidas and 5th at Wendy's.  She ran 17:23 at the Mideastern Conference Championships held at Long Leaf Park.  Medlin holds personal bests on the track of 2:25, 5:12 and 11:19 which might not hold up too long as track season approaches.

Joshua Palmer (Cuthbertson)

Joshua Palmer lit up the state as a middle schooler last fall running 9:33 for 3K and 10:35 for 2 Miles.  On the track Palmer got even better running 9:54 for 3200m, 4:25 for 1600m and 2:01 for the 800m.  He ran 2:01.91, 4:27.55 and 9:55.25 to sweep the distance events at last years NCRunners Middle School All-State setting meet records in all three events. Palmer ran a season best at the McAlpine Pancake course of 15:45 on October 10th and followed that up with a 16:07 4A Midwest Regional performance where he took 8th overall and ran 16:04 last Saturday at the NCHSAA State Championships to finish as the top freshman on the day placing 25th overall in 4A.  He'd lead Cuthbertson as their top runner to a 6th place finish with a top 5 who will all return in 2025!
