North Carolina March Rewind!


3/1/23: East Meck Home Meet

Akala Garrett (Albemarle) kicked off her outdoor season with a NC No. 1 in the 100mH: 12.96. She broke the North Carolina state record in the event, and was the first athlete in state history to get under 13.00. It was the perfect tune-up for indoor nationals.

3/1/23: Cuthbertson Home Opener

Garrett was not the only one using their outdoor opener as a tune-up for nationals. The ladies of Cuthbertson clocked a state record in the outdoor 4x800m in their first run at the record all season. They ran 8:48.48, shattering the record by almost 15 seconds. It is also U.S. No. 5 all-time. 

3/2/23: Weddington Home Meet #1

The following day, South Mecklenburg senior Amaya Hopkins clocked a NC No. 1 time in the longer hurdle event, the 300mH. She ran a personal best of 44.71.

3/4/23: NCRunners Eastern Tour Opener & Spring into the Season Kickoff

3/9/23 - 3/12/23: Nike & New Balance Nationals

New NC No. 1's to come out of indoor nationals weekend

    -Reagan boys 4x200m

    -Cuthbertson boys 4x400m

    -Cary boys 4x800m

    -Junior Payton-Kimble (Northeastern): shot put

    -Akala Garrett: 55mH

    -Parkland Magnet IB girls 4x200m and 4x400m

    -Cuthbertson girls 4x800m (national record)

3/18/23: Clash of the Carolina's

This year's clash once again brought the heat. Chandler Welsh (RJ Reynolds) ran a NC No. 1 time in the 1,600m, being the first of the year to break 5:00. The ladies of Olympic took home two NC No. 1's of their own: the 4x200m and 4x400m. 

For the boys, the Cuthbertson duo of Reece Morgan and Killian Fahy went to work! Morgan ran NC No. 1 (21.43 +2.6) in the 200m, and Fahy ran 47.88 for a new NC No. 1. 

Xavier Branker (Ardrey Kell) ran NC No. 1 in the 110mH, as well.

3/18/23: Cary Academy Invitational

The same weekend in Cary, the track was equally lit up by the athletes. Adrien Jacobs (DSA) ran a NC No. 1 time of 1:54.98, nearly a four-seconds personal best. 

In the field events, Hannah Grace (Coastal Christian) soared over the bar in pole vault to secure the NC No. 1 height thus far: 13-6.

3/24/23: Mount Tabor Mile & Throwing Thunder

Mount Tabor senior Andrew Burrell defended his home track en route to a 4:16.63 full-mile win. 

Freshman Kasey Dingman (Lake Norman) ran a freshman No. 5 all-time 5:02.32 in the full-mile to get the win.

3/24/23 - 3/25/23: Weddington Invitational

Croatan's boys relay teams were on fire at Weddington. They ran NC No. 1's in both the 4x400m (3:21.77) and 4x800m (7:58.93).

Adding to the NC No. 1's, Branker took home his second NC No. 1, this time in the 300mH (38.39).

3/24/23: Raleigh Relays

The top 3,200m times in the state both yield from the elite high school 3,200m field at Raleigh Relays.

Myers Park's Mary Bonner Dalton got the win in NC No. 1 fashion: 10:23.18. Her time is also U.S. No. 4 on the season. To add on, it is the NC No. 6 performance outdoors all-time. 

For the boys, Orange's Gabriel Schmid ran 9:06.93 which is NC No. 1 on the season, and NC No. 33 all-time. 

3/25/23: Timberwolf Invitational

To finish off the month, Akala Garrett took to the flat racing over the hurdles. She ran NC No. 1 time of 55.78. Garrett has won all four races she has competed in this outdoor season.
