The Present and The Future: Yolanda Calhoun

Watch Yolanda Calhoun win the 400m at the 2022 NCRunners Middle School Elite Invitational.

This weekend at the Cary Academy Invitational, a breakout star emerged right in front of our very eyes. Although, to herself, it is no surprise. 8th grade superstar Yolanda Calhoun is the current NC No. 1 in the 400m this season.

Running for Wesleyan Christian Academy, Calhoun could be the next great NCISAA star.

It was double duty this weekend for Calhoun, as she was scheduled to race the 200m and 400m at Cary Academy Invitational.

Not only did she get the win in both events against a talented field, she set a new personal best and a new NC No. 1 on the season.

She clocked a lifetime best of 25.83 to win the 200m, which is currently NC No. 13. However, the 400m might be her focus moving forward.

Her 400m time of 56.98 is good for NC No. 1 on the season, and it is the second time in her career she has dipped under 57.00. Unofficially, it is also a Cary Academy facility record. In 2022, Calhoun ran 56.82 at the 15th Annual Mark Trail Invitational in Georgia. Also this past spring, Calhoun placed 4th in the 13 year old age division 400m dash finals.

Calhoun is now NC Middle School No. 4 all-time in the 400m, and is U.S. Middle School No. 2 on the year.

As a 7th grader, she ran 25.98 for the 200m and 2:28.08 for the 800m.

Get ready, #TeamNC, because Yolanda Calhoun is here to stay.
