Big time matchups headline the NCHSAA 4A classification with some of the states best going toe-to-toe for the final time indoors.
The battle of the shot put will be a continuation of their battle from Mondo Elite, which went down to the final throw of the night. Glover (Ardrey Kell) got the win, making her undefeated in three competitions on the season. She is also the defending outdoor shot put state champion. Dulaney is not to be taken lightly. It was at Mondo that she broke the 40' barrier for the first time. Shattered the barrier, really. She tossed NC No. 2 42-1. That places her NC No. 17 all-time. Glover's best of 46-6 is NC No. 4 all-time.
Newly crowned long jump state record holder Tyson Adams (West Forsyth) will be put to the test against Reagan's Andrew Steele. Adams is the defending indoor and outdoor long jump state champion. Steele was 3rd outdoors. He has only competed once this indoor season, his 23-11.5 performance at Mondo Elite.
Big points are up for grabs in the triple jump. At The VA Showcase, Cuthbertson's Liu took 4th place in a huge personal best of 38-5, which still sits NC No. 1. Only two inches behind was Olympic's Jahaila Wright who took 6th place. They are the current NC No. 1-2 in the event. Familiar faces join them at NC No. 2 and 3. Liu's teammate Maya Studney is NC No. 4, and Wright's teammate PenaSoto is NC No. 3.
Will these two push each other to the 7-0 barrier? Reagan's Koger opened his season with a 6-11 jump indoors back in November. Since then he has won the COROS Invitational and Mondo Elite HS Invitational. In the two matchups between them this season, however, Thomas has gotten the best of Koger. (6'6" to 6'4", and 6'8" to 6'8" but Thomas had fewer misses.) Thomas holds a season best of 6'8". At the 2022 outdoor state meet, Koger was 4th and Thomas was 7th.
The 4x800m's
The girls 4x800m will kick off the NCHSAA 4A state meet and it will be an electric start. Cuthbertson is running a strong squad that includes Lillian Nasta, Justine Preisano, Josie Schihl, and Addison Miller. Mount Tabor and Cardinal Gibbons are seeded second and third respectively and they both look to dethrone the Cavaliers. Mount Tabor is running a team of Bronwyn Parks, Hannah Riley, Eliza Brand, and Katie McFerrin. Meanwhile, Cardinal Gibbons is running Hannah Rae Shaffer, Addy Mitchell, Peyton LaNasa, and Ina Lazarczyk.
For the boys, the top ten seeds are within 16-seconds of each other, with seeds 4-10 separated by only 4-seconds.
Three of those teams have broken 8:10.00 on the season. Mount Tabor is the top seed and are running Conner Inman, Andrew Riley, Luke Armentrout, and Andrew Burrell. Burrell is fresh off a win in the elite 800m at Mondo Elite. They have clocked 8:02.75 as a team.
Charlotte Catholic is running Ian Pierce, AJ Painter, Nick Potter, and Logan Hill. Both Charlotte Catholic and Mount Tabor have three seniors on their squad, so will mean even more to them. They ran 8:05.62 this season.
Cary clocked 8:08.72 and will run Marco Evans, Luke Liming, Max Langenbach, and Lex Lundergan.
Gray Williams (Parkland) and Wegh are seeded No. 1 and 2 respectively in both the 55m and 300m dashes. Gray-Williams is NCHSAA 4A No. 1 on the season in both events. Wegh, known for her hurdle expertise, will be going after the straight sprint titles. She was runner-up in the 60mH at Mondo Elite.
The 55m dash will be one for the ages between Parkland's Hughes Jr. and Mallard Creek's Dixon. Hughes Jr. is NC No. 1 (6.29)on the season and Dixons is not far behind at NC No. 2 (6.32). Hughes Jr. won the 200m at Mondo Elite and was runner-up in the elite 60m.
