Akala Garrett Wins 400mH at U20 World Championships


Harding rising senior Akala Garrett made the trip down to Cali, Colombia well worth it with a gold medal in the 400mH at the U20 World Championship. Garrett improved her North Carolina No. 2 all-time mark clocking 56.16 to take home the win. 

She took down Hannah Karlsson of Sweden and Michaela Rose of the USA. Garrett's time is a U20 world leading time. 

Garrett is still gunning for Anna Cockrell's state record of 55.20 in the 400mH. She is committed to the University of Texas for the fall of 2023. 

She won the NCHSAA 4A 100mH and 400mH this spring to go along with a 55mH indoor state title this past winter. She won the NSAF Indoor 60mH National Title. She also won the USATF U20 National Title in the 400mH to qualify for the U20 World Championship.
