Tasty Races: Zack Gilbertson and Ryan Motondo Win For Gio

It was an emotional weekend in North Carolina. We are still hurt from the loss of Gio Rincon, but that didn't stop two close friends and competitors from each paying their respects to Gio the only way they knew how: winning.

Friday at the NCHSAA 3A Mideast Regional, Ryan Motondo (Walter Williams) took home the victory in the 800m running 1:59.31. He came charging around the final curve in 5th, but his will was strong. He passed the four runners ahead of him, barely edging Quinn Baker for the win. He emphatically tossed up his fist as he crossed the finish line with a message clearer than day: Gio.

The next day at NCHSAA 4A Mideast, it was Gio's friendly county-rival Zack Gilbertson's turn to qualify for the state meet. The Pinecrest junior let the race come to him, as the early leader was out in front of the chase pack. He slowly closed the gap and made the pass as they hit bell lap and Gilbertson did not hold back. He won that race emphatically and, like Motondo, had a heart-warming message as he crossed the line in first: Gio.

Both runners will be chasing the gold this weekend at the NCHSAA State Championship at NC A&T.
