Harding's Akala Garrett Runs NC No. 2 All-Time 300mH

Watch Akala Garrett run then-US No. 1 in the 55mH at the NCHSAA 4A Indoor State Championship.

Harding junior Akala Garrett clocked a NC No. 2 all-time 40.62 in the 300mH Wednesday afternoon at Hough Meet #1. Her time is only .2 seconds off the state record of 40.42 held by Anna Cockrell in 2016.

She set the state junior class record and now sits US Junior Class T-No. 4 all-time, behind class record holder Ebony Collins, who ran 40.13 in 2006.

Overall, her time sits her US T-No. 17 all-time. Only two girls in high school history have broken 40.00 in the event, Sydney McLaughlin in 2017 and Lashinda Demus in 2001.

During the 2021-22 indoor season, Garrett took home the NCHSAA 4A State Meet MVP, winning the 55mH and 500m, and taking runner-up in the 300m. She went on to win the national title at Nike Indoor in the 60mH and finished runner-up in the 400m.
