Breaking Down The NCHSAA State Meet MVP Winners

There were dozens of athletes deserving of the NCHSAA State Meet MVP award, but only one boy and one girl from each classification could take home the hardware. Your 2022 NCHSAA Indoor Track and Field State Meet MVPs are:

1A/2A Boys: Trevin Moyer (Mountain Island Charter School)

Moyer ran a US No. 2 6.25 in the 55m dash finals to set a new 1A/2A state meet record. He doubled back in the 500m, setting another 1A/2A state meet record, taking the win in 1:05.31.

1A/2A Girls: Tamesia Pinnix (Cummings)

The senior took home two wins on Friday. One in the triple jump, jumping a personal best of 37-5, and the other in the 55mH finals where she ran 8.15. She finished runner-up in the long jump as well, jumping 17-5.

3A Boys: Cameron Snead (West Johnston)

The jump specialist soared to new heights on Saturday. He took home wins in the triple jump, 43-11.50, and long jump, 21-0.75. He took runner-up in the high jump, clearing 5-10. Snead said in his post-event interview he's only been high jumping for a little over a month.

3A Girls: Navaya Zales (Croatan)

The senior dominated the distance events, winning the 1,000m and 1,600m, and finished runner-up in the 3,200m. She broke the 5:00 barrier in the 1,600m for the first time, clocking 4:59.99. Her time is good for a new 3A state meet record. With little time between the 1,600m and 1,000m Zales had to be on her A-game, and she was. She ran 3:05.77 to secure her second win of the day.

4A Boys: Jacob Laney (Porter Ridge)

Laney took home victories in both the 1,600m and 3,200m runs. His 4:15.34 in the 1,600m is good for a new NC No. 1 this season and is a North Carolina junior class record! In the 3,200m, Laney broke away from the field late and crossed the line in 9:20.96.

4A Girls: Akala Garrett (Harding)

It was a busy day for the Harding junior. She started her day off on the right foot with a new US No. 1 time in the 55mH finals: 7.88. After some down time, Garrett was back on the track for the 500m. She shot out like a rocket and never looked back. She took her second win of the day in 1:14.37. There was little time in between the 500m and 300m, but Garrett stayed ready. She finished runner up in the 300m dash.
