Cuthbertson distance star Gabriella Castro has committed to Wake Forest University to continue her track and cross country career.
Castro kicked off her track career running sprint events throughout middle school. She would run cross country and make Cuthbertson's varsity cross country team as a freshman placing 16th at the NCHSAA 3A state championships.
She'd been strong on the track playing a crucial part of the program's team success who have won team title indoors the last three years and the last two years in cross country. However, she took big steps forward in her running career over the last year.
Gabby finished 2nd in the 1000m at the NCHSAA 3A Indoor State Championship running a PR of 3:04. She then had her best outdoor season to date, running a 5:05 PR for a 3rd place finish outdoors. This cross country season that success continued as she medaled in the Great American Race of Champions and winning the SCC Conference Championship, 3A Midwest Regional Championship, and running a Cuthbertson School Record 18:01 for a Runner-Up finish in the 3A State Championship.
Castro chose Wake Forest over several other suitors, including William & Mary, Elon, UNC Chapel Hill, and App State. "I chose Wake Forest because it is a great fit. They offer a variety of fields of study in biology, and I felt welcomed by the girls on the team. I also had a great connection with the coaches throughout the process".
A 4.5 GPA student, Castro will graduate from Cuthbertson with two cross country team titles, three indoor team titles and a chance for two additional team titles and a few individual titles of her own.
