Watauga's Sophia Ritter is coming off of a cross country season where she made tremendous strides-she dropped her 5k time nearly 40 seconds, from 19:10.50 to 1:33.94. Now as a senior this fall, Ritter will hope to mimic that improvement to lead the way in the 3A classification.
Ritter already has experience performing highly when it counts; she finished sixth last year at the 3A state cross country meet and fifteenth at the same event as a sophomore. She also historically improves steadily throughout the course of the season, her season bests for her junior and sophomore seasons coming at the state meet and the Footlocker South Regional. Look for Ritter to compete better than others towards the end of the season.
And Ritter is coming off of a relatively impressive junior track season. She earned fourth in the 1,600m and fifth in the 3,200m at the outdoor state championships back in May. Ritter's strength on the track as a junior could help propel her to fast times early on in the fall cross country season.
Ritter will face tough challenges from other girls in the brutal 3A division-Madeline Hill (Cuthbertson), Hayley Whoolery (West Johnson), and Jonna Strange (North Iredell), will look to lead 3A, to name a few. But if Ritter can execute her signature seasonal progression, she could find herself on the podium at the state meet in November.
