NCHSAA 3A State Championship Meet Preview

Girls Field

Triple Jump

Ija Mumford (Parkland) has cleared 38 feet, while no one else has cleared 37. M'Smrya Seward (Franklington) and Amaya English will have the next best shot at Mumford, as both have at least cleared 36. A large pack of girls will be hard charging behind them. Katie Gilliland (Western Guilford), Jayda Hunter (Jacksonville), Diamond Lyerly (Parkland), Anna Shelton (South Brunswick) and Marissa Schalk (St. Stephens) have all cleared 35 and all have a shot to move up in the scoring ranks.

High Jump

13 athletes have cleared five feet this season, so this event is stacked. Netanya Linares (Cuthbertson) and Rebekah Smith (Franklinton) are the leaders at 5-4, with Sophie Draughon (West Carteret) just behind at 5-3. Caroline Smith (Cuthbertson) will have team points on her mind as she and Joelie DeVries (Union Pines) look to hold off the massive pack of girls at 5-0 right behind them.

Long Jump

Ija Mumford will also be favored to bring home 10 points in the long jump, with Parkland teammates Amari Simington and Jadai Stevenson Damon also seeded in the top six. Sandwiched between them are Courtney Lines (North Brunswick), M'Smrya Seward (Franklington) and Anna Shelton (South Brunswick). Lines has the best shot at Mumford, only 3.5 inches behind. Everyone else has more than a foot to go if they want to find themselves among the top two.

Pole Vault

Netanya Linares (Cuthbertson) is the big leader and her teammates Ava Studney and Lainie Baumgardner are joined by Isabel Crandall (Marvin Ridge) as the collective second seeds at 11 feet. Three more girls are at 10-6 with Elizabeth Wood (Mount Tabor), Emma Stone (Marvin Ridge) and Sami Eberhard (Weddington) making up the chase group of jumpers.

Shot Put

Samantha Ennis (Northwood) is the leader in the event and Makayla Watkins (Western Guilford) has also thrown farther than 40 feet. Jada Green (Hillside) has the best shot at bridging the gap after a 38-11 throw at the Green and Gold NC/VA Border Clash. Ono Abhulimen (Mount Tabor) has chucked it over 34 and will look to find a podium spot.
