NCHSAA 3A State Championship Meet Preview

Boys Field

Triple Jump

Jordan Purvis from Southern Durham is the only athlete in 3A with a seed of more than 46 feet, but No. 2 seed Kobe Funderburk bested him at the Green & Gold NC/VA Border Clash a month ago. Also having cleared 44 this season are Ahmad Joyner (Southwest Guilford) and Clarence Ward (Hunt). Joyner was 16th at last year's state meet, but hasn't been beat by a 3A competitor all season and hasn't been beaten by any high school competitor in nearly two months. Look for him to post a solid mark and find a podium spot.

High Jump

Joshua Parks (A.L. Brown) and Kolby Cuthrell (Southwest Guilford) come in tied for the best seed at 6-6. Cuthrell has the experience advantage, having finished fifth in the event at the state meet a year ago. Malaki Benton (South Johnston) is the next highest returner, but will have to chase down Spencer Yandrofski (East Chapel Hill) and Julien Stephens (Jacksonville) who have both jumped 6-4.

Long Jump

Kolby Cuthrell again has experience advantage, having finished third in the state meet last season, and has the highest seed jump too. But just a half inch behind him is Dionte Alston (Hunt). Jieem Bullock and Julian Stephens have both hit the 22 foot and beyond mark, but don't sleep on Thai Tuttanon (Kings Mountain) who was fourth last year in this event. Kameron Palmer (Mount Tabor) has had a great season and will look to improve on his 21-6 from his win at the Green and Gold Border Clash to have a chance to move up in the standings.

Pole Vault

Patrick Freeman (Mount Tabor) is the top returner in the pole vault, and will look to continue Mount Tabor's history of success in this event as the top seed. Benjamin Cargnel (Marvin Ridge) won't make it easy on him though, and Marcus Hesske (Parkwood) has also cleared 14 feet this season. Ethan Basinger (Marvin Ridge) is next in line to step up and have a big day for his chance at a podium spot.

Shot Put

Dominique Partridge made the move over to Chapel Hill since last season, and has bested his top-3 state meet mark from last season already this season having thrown 48-8.5. Ahead of him in the seeding are Ronald Gilliard (Dudley), who is the only athlete to have thrown more than 50 feet. Quadrez Lassiter (Eastern Wayne) will look to get ahead of the two seniors, and is just below the 50 foot mark. Jamel Abalos (Swansboro) and Quiontay Foust (Eastern Wayne) are tied for the fourth seed.
