NCHSAA 3A State Championship Meet Preview

Boys Sprints

55 Meter Dash

The Weddington boys have even more fireworks in this race than they did a season ago when they had two in the top six in the finals at the state meet. This season, they have No. 1 seed Will Shipley and No. 2 seed Emerson Douds, who both come in having clocked under 6.40 seconds. Jacquez Roseboro from Parkland finished second at last year's state meet and is the six seed entering Friday. Corey Johnson  from Walter Williams is another senior, along with Shipley, Douds, Roseboro and Jamel Mcelveen of Southwest Guilford who all come in with top-eight seed times. Look for these seniors to make the most of their final indoor track meet and battle it out for a time that could challenge the 3A record.

500 Meter Dash

Dajhon Prince of Westover is the top returning junior from last year's state meet, but Kacey Pratt of Hillside and Douds both have faster seed times among the qualifiers this year. Trevor Townsend of Cuthbertson and Mark Burns from Cape Fear round out the top five seeds in the virtual meet, but there is a pack of runners who are under 1:08 who will look to score for their teams.

300 Meter Dash

Douds, Mcelveen, and Johnson will also compete for a title in the 300, but it is Parkland senior Savien Hayes who comes in with the top time, and the third fastest time this season in any classification. Douds won it all last year in a 3A record time, with Hayes coming in second. Bradon Black of Cuthbertson is another returner who rounds out last year's group of juniors that swept the top three at the state meet. He is joined by teammate Aidan McNally as a top 5 seed. Jalen Neal from A.L. Brown has a great chance of beating his seventh seed, having posted a faster time in the regular season than he did in his sixth place finish at last year's state meet.

55 Meter Hurdles

Benjamin Buie from Southern Lee and Joshua Parks from A.L. Brown are separated by a hundredth of a second in the seeding. Zach Barksdale from Parkwood, was the runner up a season ago, but third place finisher Jalen Houston from West Rowan has a faster seed time so far this season. Jieem Bullock is tied with Barksdale in the seed times and has the speed to make some noise in this race as well.
