Boys 300m Hurdles
We saw a tight battle between Peter Cordier (Weddington MS) and Tripp Jenkins (Cuthbertson MS). The two had run 46.31 and 47.83 respectively this season and were the two favorites heading into the race by a decent margin. Cordier was on the inside of Jenkins in lane 4 and kept an eye on his throughout the race. As they approached the final 100 they had been even over pretty much every hurdle, and now were side by side. Cordier took a slight lead, but Jenkins was fighting hard for the win. Cordier was able to hold on by .09 seconds ahead of Jenkins as both boys were able to blow away the rest of the field! Their times were 45.54 and 45.63 respectively as both were able to set massive PRs.BOYS 300 METER HURDLES FINALS | ||||||||

Girls 400m Dash
We had an epic battle between 7th graders Akala Garrett (Westerly Hills Academy) and Kaylyn Brown (Holbrook MS) in the 400. Garrett held a PR of 57.43 and Brown 57.14 heading into the race. We had seen Garrett's 14.80 100m Hurdle earlier in the day, and knew she was going to have a strong 400 coming up.
Brown went out very hard as she and Garrett were able to make up the stagger on the field within the first 100 meters. Brown was a little faster than Garrett early in the race, and Garrett had to try close the gap over the final 200. Brown powered do the homestretch setting a new PR of 56.84 with Garrett just behind in 57.57. Garrett was just over her PR from her 6th grade year.
Brown currently sits at US#3 amongst Middle School girls, and is the top 7th grader in the nation so far this year for the 400. We can't wait to see the rematch over the course of the summer and back next year at this meet!
