Rain & Wind? No Problem! Weekend 3 Rundown

A staple of the early-season schedule in the Piedmont, this is a meet with a great history (but also routinely bad luck with weather).  The event produced only one state-leading mark, but it did have two intense duels between top-flight athletes that will contend for state titles:

  • Chesney Ward (Ragsdale) won the pole vault with a mark of 12' 4" NC #1 US #18, which makes you wonder what she can do in decent conditions.
  • James Gildard (East Chapel Hill) won a great battle with Jack Cawley (Middle Creek), clocking what is technically the top 1600 time in the state this season with his 4:23.22 (although a few of the mile times from UNC convert to better 1600's).
  • Terrell Adams (Middle Creek) and Magnus Herweyer (Carrboro), arguably the two best all-around throwers in the state, squared off in the cool, damp weather Saturday.  Adams took both events, throwing the discus 170' 1" and putting the shot 55' 9.5", both a little behind his season bests.
