Micah Arrants story

This weekend, NW Cabarrus is hosting an event in order to raise money for the Micah Arrants Memorial Scholarship Fund.

“MILES 4 MICAH” FUNDRAISER FEATURES 3 RACES ON MARCH 15

CONCORD – Northwest Cabarrus High School will hold a “Miles 4 Micah” fundraiser on March 15, for a scholarship fund established in memory of a student who passed away on Thanksgiving Day.

The fundraiser will feature three running events, music, art exhibits, refreshments and more at Frank Liske Park in Concord.

Northwest Cabarrus Coach Keith Rhoney said his cross-country runners selected the event name, to honor the memory of Micah Rhea (pronounced “Ray”) Arrants.

Micah, 17, was a senior at Northwest Cabarrus, a leader of the cross-country team, a top student, artist and musician. He died Nov. 22 at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill of complications from a rare blood clotting disorder.

Micah was a friend to everyone, and he loved to run. He encouraged other runners, recruited new ones to the team, and fostered team spirit with good will and humor.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Micah Rhea Arrants Memorial Scholarship Fund established by his family.

The race schedule is: 9 a.m., certified 5K run; 9:30 a.m., two-mile prediction run/walk; and 10 a.m., one-mile fun run for ages 12 and under. Awards also will be given.

In the prediction run/walk, participants must send in their expected time on the entry form. Winners are those who run/walk closest to their predicted time; no watches will be allowed. This low-key event is meant to represent Micah’s love for having fun while you run.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. the day of the event, near the park volleyball courts. Entry fees on or before March 7 range from $10-$15 depending on the event, and $15-$20 after March 7. The first 300 entrants get a T-shirt.
