Rivalries Renewed and Streaks on the Line: NCISAA State Meet Preview

3A Girls

Sarah Bodmer is for real, y'all. The Cary Academy sophomore won the 3A individual title last year, but it came with an asterisk - pre-race favorite and defending champ Eliza Dekker was forced to drop out of the race due to illness. This year, though, Bodmer has taken another big step forward, clocking 18:19 at WakeMed just this past week in her conference meet (that puts her at 6th in the state overall right now). She will get a good race from Jena Metwalli (Cannon School), and Jennifer Stephenson (Village Christian) returns to 3A with mid-18's potential. But right now it looks like Bodmer will be very hard to beat - and I get the sneaking suspicion that she hasn't shown all her cards yet.

Arguably the biggest question coming into this meet: can the Providence Day girls extend their championship streak to a 4th year? Put another way: after three years of PD sweeping both team titles, is it possible that Cary Academy could pull off the same feat in 2015? Our virtual meet predicts this to be a very close race between the two sets of Chargers, too close for there to be a significant favorite at this point. Unless something strange happens, everyone else will be fighting for third place - and "everyone else" pretty much means CISAA rivals Cannon School and Charlotte Latin, unless the Ravenscroft girls mount a strong challenge.
