Adidas Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational Recap

Coach Ron Olsen's Recap

This was hyped to be quite a showdown on the boy’s side. Western Albemarle(VA) just received the #3 ranking in the Southeast for the NTN Regional Poll. Broughton and Enloe both were named to the honorable mention list. Then of course you had Chapel Hill, who had represented the SE region at NTN for the last 2 years.

The race for first became a similar dual to last week’s Seahawk Invitational. Enloe sending out their two top runners, Nick Graw and Nick Carter, ahead of Broughton’s pack. Broughton’s pack trying to stay in front of Enloe’s #3. Add in Western Albemarle, who has a team somewhat like Enloe, with two front-runners, and it was quite interesting.

Chapel Hill’s Taylor Gilland won with a time of 15:47, 13 seconds ahead of Enloe’s Nick Graw. Western Albemarle took the 3rd and 4th spots with Tyler Stutzman and Kyle Satterwhite. They split up Eloe’s top 2, as Nick Carter placed 5th. So in the top 5, there were 2 Enloe athletes, 2 Western Albemarle athletes, and no Broughton athletes.

Broughton’s number 1, today, was Burk Staub who placed 9th overall. Burk led Broughton who then placed their next 3 all together in 11th, 12th, & 13th. Western Albemarle and Enloe found their #3 runners racing in together, taking 16th and 17th respectively. So after 3 athletes, Enloe and Western Albemarle were separated by 1 point, with Western ahead. Broughton’s 5th finished 19th and secured the win for them.

Broughton is currently ranked 1st in the 4A Coaches Poll. With their win in Raleigh, they will definitely keep them there. It should propel them towards a top 10 ranking in the region as well!

Broughton – 65 pts
Burk Staub, 9th – 16:42
Pierre Malherbe, 11th – 16:44
Cheyenne Hite, 12th – 16:45
Reidy Jones, 13th – 16:47
Deaton Jones, 19th – 17:03

Western and Enloe weren’t done racing, though. Enloe’s 4th finished 25th, 2 placeds ahead of Western’s 4th. So now, through 4 athletes, Enloe was up by 1 point. Their 5th runners didn’t want to be left out of the team battle. Enloe topped Western Alebemarle by 1 point when Enloe’s 5th crossed the line in 1 place ahead of Western’s. Check out how close the battle was for 2nd.

Enloe – 77 pts

Nick Carter, 5th – 16:25

John Kitto, 17th – 16:58

The girl’s Championship Race looked to be a battle from two teams from Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill and Chapel Hill. East Chapel Hill was coming off a very good performance at last week’s Seahawk Invitational, finishing 3rd. Chapel Hill looked much improved from their 2nd place at the WNC CC Carnival, as their top 6 girls 1:03. They were led by Molly Spencer and Madison Stark who both ran 20:04 and finished 8th and 9th respectively. Their #5 finished 22nd overall as they totaled 61 points. Chapel Hill’s girls looked like the 4A defending state champs and the #1 ranked 4A team in the state.

Chapel Hill
Molly Spencer, 8th – 20:04
Madison Stark, 9th – 20:04
Christine Whitley, 17th – 20:30
Ahna Weeks, 20th – 20:55
Lindsay Savelli, 22nd – 20:56

East Chapel Hill was 2nd, led by Caitie Safrit’s 20:10 and 13th place. Their 2-5 looked to have run together as they had finishing times from 21:00 to 21:10. East Chapel Hill is currently ranked #4 in the 4A poll and will definitely hold strong with their 2nd impressive performance in back to back weeks.

Aurora Scott, last year’s Foot Locker South champion and National Foot Locker runner-up won the girl’s race with a time of 18:27.

Behind her were two of North Carolina’s best. Apex’s Andie Cozzarelli barely edged Durham Academy’s Adrianne Soo, as both were timed at 19:12. Andie recently won the Seahawk Invitational in 19:00, running away from the rest of field. Adrianne was running her 2nd race of the year; she ran 20:30 a few days ago and is still working on coming back from hip surgery.
