Elite, Even Among the Elite: 4A State Meet Recap

Boys Top Performances

There was an interesting theme to the boys' individual performances at this meet: aside from one notable, well-known performer, this was a meet where some new blood had a chance to make its name - especially since graduation had decimated certain events over the last few years. Take Jonte Leaston (Millbrook) for example - he scored 20 points by finishing 2nd in the long jump (with a big PR of 22' 6.5" NC #4), 2nd in the high jump, and 5th in the triple jump. Some other noteworthy efforts:

  • Dylan Peebles (Wakefield) built on a strong 400 last weekend to claim the 300 title in 34.53 NC #1 US #11 NC #8 All-Time, and he's going to be back next year.
  • T.J. Bleichner (Fuquay-Varina) rallied to win the 500 in 1:05.37 US #6 NC #15 All-Time.
  • Kenny Kneisel (Mount Tabor) earned two seconds on a day when first was just not going to happen, and he kept Philip Hall honest in both races.
  • In the 55 Dash Nyheim Hines (Garner, 6.28 US #3 NC #10 All-Time) continued his rapid improvement that started last spring, and Rodney Rowe (Clayton, 6.32 US #7 NC #16 All-Time) continued to improve as the breakout sprint star of 2015.
  • Michael Utecht (Apex) joined the 15' 6" club while winning the vault, and also tied for NC #6 All-Time.
  • Darryl Shaw (Jack Britt) improved to US #14 in the triple jump with his 47' 5.25".

Of course, the one exception was Marcus Krah (Hillside), who inched his PR in the 55 Hurdles to 7.24 US #2 NC #7 All-Time. He didn't have his best day in the jumps, finishing 2nd in the triple and 3rd in the long, but that's still a 24-point day that MIGHT have won an MVP at many 4A state meets. His teammate Desmond Jackson set PR's in the Adaptive 55 Dash and Adaptive 300, and he also won the Adaptive Long Jump. Jordan Maddox (Southeast Raleigh) posted the state's best time in the Wheelchair 55 Dash while also winning the Wheelchair Shot Put.
