The Western Harnett senior is the vanguard of the movement toward smaller, more explosive throwers that NC has seen lately.
Mateius Brown can be hard to pick out from the crowd of throwers at a meet - that is, until a split-second after he releases the shot. That's when he unleashes his trademark yell, which you can hear all around the track, and if the throw is good it will be followed by several more. This interview was actually the first time I had ever spoken to Mateius, so the only impression I had to go on was that diplay of emotion in the circle. In conversation, the emotion is still there, but it's clear that he has more than enough self-control to regulate it and use it purposefully. In fact, you can get the sense that this is a young man with the potential to accomplish much in his life, one of those rare people that seems to be lit by an inner fire in comparison to everyone else. He is definitely driven, and that counts for a lot, both in the throwing ring and in life, so expect great things from Mr. Brown in the future. The 3A throws are developing into a real Murderer's Row, with at least 4 championship-caliber athletes around this spring (and all of them seniors) - and it is Mateius that will make sure they get their fair share of attention.
