Hill is running his way to the top of an elite list of national athletes

Ryan Hill tried baseball. He likes football and basketball. But it was running, always running, that the Hickory High School junior loved best.

The rest of the country is about to find out just how far that love has taken him: In a little more than a week, Hill will compete against 39 other elite high school boys in the national cross country championships in San Diego.

Hill, 16, isn't just Hickory High's best-ever cross country runner. He's among the best in the state, undefeated in all conference races, a two-time state 3A cross country champion and the reigning 3,200-meter outdoor track champion.
