McCann Sheridan was in third at the bell and looked to be done, when he mounted a huge kick to take the win.

Highlights

  • Kayla Glova (Providence) took the lead from the gun, but by the second lap a pack of three had tried to close the gap on her.  Annie Hetzel (Grace Academy) and Emma Link (South Mecklenburg) weren't able to hold the pace at the front, and they battled each other the rest of the race.   However, Anna McElrath (Independence) was able to work her way onto Glova's heels, and the two pushed each other through the second mile of the race.  Glova opened a small gap as the two entered the final lap, and her kick was too much for McElrath to answer.  The Providence soph shifted gears again on the final stretch to finish in 11:33.7.  McElrath clocked 11:47.50, while Hetzel and Link both broke 12 minutes.

  • McCann Sheridan (JM Robinson) looked like he was done with 400 to go; he had Jack Ratterree (Charlotte Latin) and Andrew Garcia (Hickory Grove Baptist) in front of him, and his body language wasn't great.  On the back stretch of the final lap, however, Sheridan rallied, and his powerful kick carried him all the way to the finish line with a winning time of 9:43.2.  Ratterree had tried to respond as they came through the final curve, but he had to settle for second and a fine time of 9:47.9.  Garcia finished third, and he was joined by three other runners who broke 10 minutes: Alex Cornwell (Hickory Ridge), Fisher Ramsey (East Mecklenburg), and Patrick Hunter (Cannon School).
