Collin Loy had an impressive run at UNCW, cementing his status as a force to be reckoned with in the 4A ranks.

 

 

Featured Meet: adidas Seahawk Invitational (UNC-Wilmington)

Highlights:

  • Collin Loy (Southern Alamance) broke away from early leader Chris O'Brien (Raleigh Charter) just past the midpoint of the race, and brought home the win in 15:44.  Mihret Coulter (Apex) had a tremendous third mile, passing several fading contenders to finish second in 15:55.

  • Apex had a very strong team showing, placing 4 runners in the top 25 to take the win with 79 points.  Broughton, running without three of their normal top 7 runners, finished second with 103 points.  East Chapel Hill and Cary both exceeded expectations, and showed that they might have the makings of state meet teams.

  • As expected, Grace Sullivan (Providence) and Sydney Foreman (Ardrey Kell) took command early, although the pace of the girls' championship race was far from blistering.  Sullivan eventally opened up a small gap, and she proceeded to win with a time of 18:27 to Foreman's 18:36.  Bianca Bishop (Providence), in her first race back from injury, started conservatively but moved up for third place.

  • Despite having 3 runners in the top 11, Providence could not overcome the depth of Green Hope, and the Falcons prevailed by a score of 72-105.  Pinecrest also had a strong pack, but were not able to counter the Panther's strength up front, and so the Patriots finished third, holding off Ardrey Kell.

  • Jack Cawley (Middle Creek) won the boys' varsity race in 16:46, holding off Matthew Calvelo (Western Harnett, 16:49) and Graves Littlejohn (Forsyth Country Day, 16:50).

  • Forsyth Country Day dominated the boys' varsity race, scoring only 49 points while all other teams were above 100.

  • Hannah Zenker (Franklin Academy) led the girls' varsity race from wire to wire, clocking 18:54 to win by 23 seconds over 8th-grader Lindsay Ickes (Forsyth Country Day).

  • The Bishop McGuinness girls held off Middle Creek, 84-85, to secure the varsity race title.

  • Apex showed tremendous depth by controlling the boys' JV race, while the Green Hope girls (in typical fashion) occupied most of the top spots in both the JV and developmental races.

 

Cannon Invitational (Cannon School, Concord)

Coverage:

Highlights:

  • McCann Sheridan (JM Robinson) outkicked Elijah Inuwah (Central Academy of Technology) at the end of the tough course to take the win in the boys' race.

  • Lake Norman Charter's boys used a 40-second 1-5 split (including 6 seconds between their 3rd through 5th runners) to earn the team title.  Host Cannon School narrowly held on to second place over Robinson.

  • Malia Ellington (Community School of Davidson) pulled away from the girls' field, winning by almost 40 seconds with her 19:26 (the second-fastest time on this course according to the MileSplit database).  Sophia Bhalla (Lincoln Charter) was second in 20:05.

  • Jay M. Robinson took home the girls' race trophy, edging out Lincoln Charter by a score of 81-90.

 

SCSDB Eye-Opener Invitational (Roger Millikan Center, Spartanburg, SC)

Coverage:

Highlights:

  • Ben Huffman (Providence Day) tried to take command of the boys' International Race, but James Quattlebaum (GA) and Tanis Baldwin (East Henderson) were able to track him down, and Quattlebaum won with a ferocious final kick.  Baldwin ended up second with a 15:31 time, while Huffman finished third in 15:38.

  • Providence Day took the boys' team title, getting their plaque signed by running legend Frank Shorter in the process.  Asheville continued their impressive start to the season by finishing second in the International Race, the highest varsity race of the meet.

  • Zachary Marchinko (Jesse Carson) finished second in the boys' Championship Race (the second varsity race), leading his team to a thrid place finish in the team scores.  West Forsyth's boys finished second in the same race.

  • Teammates Ellen Spencer and Ashley Smith (West Forsyth) took the top two spots in the girls Championship Race, bringing the Titans to a fourth in the team scoring.

 

Trojan Invitational (Northwestern HS, Rock Hill, SC)

Coverage:

Highlights:

  • Ryan Hobbs (Weddington) won in 16:29, with teammate Mitchell Resor fourth.  That was enough to key the Warriors' 50-64 victory over Rock Hill.

  • Weddington's girls also took home the team title, outscoring Dutch Fork 65-79.  Natalie Warner led the way with her 6th-place finish individually.

 

Myers Park XC Invitational (Myers Park High School, Charlotte)

Coverage:

Highlights:

  • Patrick Sheehan (Lake Norman) continuing his recent tour of tough courses, brought home the win by running 16:53 on the hilly, highly-technical Myers Park course.  It wasn't enough to lead his team past Myers Park, though, as the Mustangs won 49-73.

  • Mary Prouty and Abby Watkins (Myers Park) went 1-2 in the girls' Green Race, keying the Mustangs to a 21 point score and a rout of the rest of the field.
