Penn Relays Saturday Recap: Westfield dazzled on Penns final day

In the much-anticipated USA versus the World competition during the final day of the 118th Penn Relays Carnival, the Americans put on a show for the nearly 50,000 that filled the stands at Franklin Stadium by sweeping all six events. (Photo by Don Rich)

Penn Relays: Burcham 2nd in Mile in 4:09.49

Jacob Burcham, a junior distance standout at Cabell Midland High School, placed second in the High School Boys' Mile Run Championship in a time of 4:09.49 at the Penn Relays Carnival on Friday, April 27th, 2012 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA.

Gazette.Net : Churchill senior places 18th at Penn Relays

For one time in Winston Churchill High School's Nadim Elhage's career, his definition of a win would not come down to how many feet he would throw in the shot put or what place he got, the victory was just the accomplishment of getting to the Penn Relays. (via )

Virginians @ Penn Relays (Friday Highlights)

Westfield boys were the fastest qualifiers of all teams in the 4x800 trials with a state best time of 7:48.39 from the indoor AAA state 4x800 relay squad and now insert themselves as a far in the Championships of American finals on Saturday. Splits for Westfield were as followed: Max Chambers (1:59.5), Jeff Edmondson (1:57.8), Nathan Kiley (1:54.8), Tyrone Walker (1:56.3). Another Northern Region relay in Annandale clocked the swiftest time among all Virginians in the 4x100 heats at 42.48 for 11th fastest overall to qualify for the large school finals tomorrow. Another Atom from Annandale in Ahmed Bile was part of a contigent of four Virginians in the Penn Relays high school mile and ended up fifth overall with a season best performance of 4:12.81.   Best race of the day from Virginia and a big surprise came from Skyline's Thomas Madden scoring his biggest win so far of his high school career as the Group AA state cross country champion won the 3000 meter title at the Penn Relays in a resounding 5 second victory at 8:25.54.  The Skyline junior Madden, who boasts a 3200 meter PR of 9:14, would have chopped off roughly 12 seconds and threatened a 9 minute flat time if he had continued on for another 200 meters. Albemarle's Adam Viskokay, who was a national runner-up indoors in the 2 mile, placed fifth in 8:34, while the state had five of the top 11 finishers with Madden, Visokay, W.T. Woodson's Paul Gates, Lake Braddock's Nick Tuck, and Princess Anne's Matthew Schwartzer.

Drazba 7th Place Penn Relays 3000m in 9:55.66

Maggie Drazba, a junior distance standout at St. Marys High School, placed seventh in the High School Girls’ 3000-meter run in a new PR of 9:55.66 at the Penn Relays Carnival on Thursday, April 26th, 2012 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA.

Penn Preview: Boys

To some, winning a Penn Relays Gold Watch is a goal just as, and even sometimes moreso important than winning a national championship.  Watches are awarded only to the overall American winners in Championship of America events at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, kicking off for the 118th time next Thursday at Franklin Field.  In some cases, most notably the sprints, it is harder to win a spot on the top of the medal stand than it is to win a national championship.  This fact is because of the international draw the relays bring to Philly; currently, there are 62 schools registered that are not from the United States, with Jamaica the most represented foreign country with 32 individual schools.  For some, winning a watch means beating the world. While the main events remain the short relays, specifically the 4x100m and 4x400m, the distance relays and open events are available on an invite basis.  And with the the high quality meet comes a high caliber field in each of the 4 invitational distance events.  We broke down the competition to help you see where the action may take place.

Penn Relays College Preview

Seven days! This isn’t some cheesy reference to an early 2000s “horror” movie but is a show of elation for the 118th Penn Relays Carnival. Now lets not kid ourselves, everyone has ThePennRelays.com as their homepage like myself and is ready for next week like I am, if you aren’t you very well should be.

Penn Relays - All HS Event Acceptances

They may be held at historic Franklin Field in Philly, but the PENN RELAYS are very much ingrained into the New Jersey T&F psyche. NJRunners starts it's Penn Relays Coverage with the lists of all accepted HS entries. JUST ADDED: Final Penn Relays HS Event Acceptances

2012 Penn Relays to Feature New Discus and Hammer Area

With the construction of Penn Park on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, plenty of new spaces have opened for the athletes of The Penn Relays. One such space is a brand new throwing area for the hammer and discuss events. (via www.thepennrelays.com)

Tatnall senior Pierce gains national fame in winter

With faster performances in more events at increasingly elite levels, Haley Pierce this winter achieved national prominence unprecedented for a Delaware runner.   Tatnall’s Haley Pierce has broken state and national high-school records and also bounced back from tendinitis, which kept interrupting her season for six important weeks. / The News Journal/FRED COMEGYS
