NCHSAA 4A Girls Indoor State Championships Preview

Field

Shot Put

We will see a strong shot put match up between Veronica Fraley (Wakefield) and Kayla Beasley (Hillside) who are the only two girls over 40 feet this indoor season.  Fraley has thrown the further of the two with a mark of 44-7 with Beasley at 41-9.5.  Candice Whitley and Courtney Murphy (SE Raleigh) will look to score critical team points for Southeast Raleigh and come in ranked 3rd and 5th respectively.

High Jump

It might seem like this will be an easy win for defending champion Kenya Livingston (Rocky River) but it's quite the contrary.  Just last week Livingston lost to Addie Renner (Myers Park) at their conference meet as both girls jumped 5-8 and are tied for NC#1.  Renner has improved 8 inches from her freshman to sophomore season and will look to go higher on Saturday. Both Renner and Livingston sit tied for NC#7 All-Time indoors in the event with their marks of 5-8 this season.  Sarah Timberlake (West Forsyth) has jumped 5-6 this season as the senior will look to have a major upset win over Renner and Livingston.

Pole Vault

Olivia Goodwin (Cary) comes in as a big favorite in this event as she won a competitive Pole Vault field at the David Oliver Classic two weeks ago and has a season's best of 12-0, 1 foot better than the rest of the 4A field.  Skyler Noble (East Chapel Hill), Midori Kirby (Panther Creek) and Lindsay Absher (West Forsyth) all enter with a season's best of 11-0 and will be looking to upset Goodwin.

Long Jump

Jade Jordan (Pine Forest) is the only girl entered above 18 ft, and she has a mark of 18-7 as her season's best.  Jordan has been over over 18 feet three out of four times she's competed this season and it will certainly be her state title to lose.  High Jumper Kenya Livingston (Rocky River) will be the second seed in this event at 17-10 followed by Samantha Davis (Southeast Raleigh) and Charnessa Reid (Mt. Tabor) just a few inches behind Livingston.

Triple Jump

Similar to the long jump, Michelle Cobb (TC Roberson) has jumped a foot further than the rest of the field and it will be her event to lose.  Cobb comes in with a mark of 37-8, Na'Zyia Evans (Olympic) is the next closest competitor at 36-6 followed by Kenya Livingston at 36-2.5. Cobb has only competed twice this indoor season with both marks well over 37.  I believe we will be seeing something very special from her as we get into the outdoor season.
